Real Madrid Cruises Past RB Leipzig 4-1 to Maintain Perfect Champions League Start

UEFA Champions League League Phase

Real Madrid continued their perfect start in the UEFA Champions League League Phase with an emphatic 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Bernardo Silva and Arda Güler scored before halftime and early in the second half, respectively, before Kylian Mbappé and former Leipzig star Yan Diomande added late goals to secure a convincing win for the Spanish giants.

RB Leipzig remained competitive for much of the first half but struggled to contain Madrid after Silva opened the scoring in the 43rd minute with his first goal for the club. Güler doubled the advantage shortly after the break, and Mbappé extended Madrid’s lead with a superb finish in the 83rd minute to claim his 12th goal of the season.

Leipzig substitute Tidiam Gomis pulled one back for the German side, but Diomande delivered the final blow with a spectacular volley against his former club, completing Madrid’s four goal performance.

Bernardo Silva Breaks the Deadlock Before Halftime

The match took time to find its rhythm, with Leipzig registering the first shot on target after 20 minutes when Ridle Baku sent a tame effort toward Thibaut Courtois. Madrid responded immediately, but Mbappé dragged his attempt wide.

Leipzig threatened again when David Raum’s pass was deflected into the path of Rômulo, whose effort was denied by Courtois. Madrid then began to find openings of its own, with Vinícius Júnior cutting inside from the left before forcing goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt to push his long-range strike wide.

Antonio Nusa provided a dangerous outlet for Leipzig down the left flank, but his effort was blocked before his subsequent cross found Rômulo, who could only direct a header straight at Courtois. Jude Bellingham also went close for the hosts, blasting over the crossbar, while Christopher Nkunku missed a golden opportunity for Leipzig after racing through on goal and being denied by Courtois.

Madrid finally broke through in the 43rd minute following a costly goalkeeping error. Vandevoordt initially blocked Güler’s attempt with his foot, but the ball squirmed between his legs, allowing Silva to react quickly and finish from close range. The goal shifted the momentum firmly in Madrid’s favor heading into halftime.

Güler Doubles Madrid’s Advantage

Madrid emerged from the break determined to extend its lead. Federico Valverde burst into the penalty area early in the second half and forced another solid save from Vandevoordt as the hosts increased the pressure.

The breakthrough came in the 52nd minute. Bellingham reached the byline and delivered a cross toward Mbappé at the far post. The French forward rose above the defense and headed the ball back across goal, where Güler arrived to ensure it crossed the line and put Madrid ahead 2-0.

Güler nearly added another after exchanging passes with Valverde during a flowing attacking move, but his first time effort was struck too close to Vandevoordt, who made the save. Leipzig struggled to regain control as Madrid continued to exploit spaces in the visitors’ defense, with Mbappé and Vinícius providing constant threats in the final third.

Mbappé and Diomande Seal Convincing Victory

Mbappé put the result beyond doubt in the 83rd minute with a clinical finish. Receiving a pass from Diomande just outside the penalty area, the Frenchman created space and curled a superb shot into the top corner, extending Madrid’s advantage to 3-0.

Leipzig refused to leave the Bernabéu without a goal. Christoph Baumgartner carved open Madrid’s defense before setting up substitute Gomis, who finished to reduce the deficit to 3-1 and give the visitors a consolation goal.

Madrid, however, had the final word. Brahim Díaz delivered a cross into the area, and Diomande connected with a thunderous volley that flew past Vandevoordt to restore the three-goal margin and complete the scoring.

Diomande, who left Leipzig in a summer transfer worth a potential €140 million ($189 million), enjoyed a memorable moment against his former club, capping Madrid’s dominant second half display with a spectacular finish.

Real Madrid Sends a Strong Champions League Message

The 4-1 victory reinforced Madrid’s strong start in the Champions League League Phase, with the Spanish club demonstrating its attacking depth and ability to take control of a match after a competitive opening period.

Silva’s breakthrough opened the door, Güler provided the decisive second goal, and Mbappé continued his prolific scoring form before Diomande delivered the finishing touch. Courtois also played a crucial role, making several important saves to prevent Leipzig from gaining an early advantage or mounting a serious comeback.

For Leipzig, the defeat highlighted the difficulty of sustaining pressure against Madrid’s quality over 90 minutes. The German side created promising opportunities in the first half but was ultimately punished for missed chances and defensive mistakes.

Madrid’s commanding performance sends a strong message to the rest of Europe as the club looks to maintain its momentum and continue its pursuit of another Champions League title.
