Spanish League Devastating On Field Collision
Spanish soccer player Jesús de Miguel has died at the age of 30 after suffering a serious injury in an on field collision during a Segunda División match on Monday, his club CD Tenerife announced Tuesday. De Miguel sustained the injuries in the closing seconds of Tenerife’s match against Andorra after colliding with goalkeeper Jesús Owono.
The striker had been chasing the ball near the halfway line when Owono, who had rushed well outside his penalty area, crashed into him at speed while attempting to clear the ball. Owono was immediately shown a red card and sent off for his role in the collision. Although the goalkeeper initially began walking off the field, he quickly returned to check on De Miguel after realizing the severity of the situation. The match was abandoned in the closing minutes as medical personnel rushed to assist the injured striker.
De Miguel’s Condition Deteriorated After Being Taken to Hospital
Following the collision, De Miguel initially went down holding his chest before eventually lying motionless on the field. Players from both teams appeared visibly devastated as medical staff attended to him. The 30-year-old was transported directly to a hospital, where his condition was initially described as stable despite the severity of his injuries.
However, his condition deteriorated overnight, with CD Tenerife announcing that he had suffered a neurological decline. On Tuesday morning, the club confirmed the devastating news that De Miguel had died. CD Tenerife president Felipe Miñambres spoke about the tragedy Tuesday, expressing the grief felt throughout the club. “We are all going through very difficult moments now, of sadness and of not believing what happened,” Miñambres said.
Andorra Pays Tribute and Postpones Upcoming Match
Andorra also released a tribute to De Miguel following the announcement of his death, expressing its condolences during an extremely difficult time for both clubs. The incident also brought significant attention to Owono, who deactivated his Instagram account on Tuesday morning after reportedly receiving a large amount of online abuse following the collision.
Later Tuesday, Andorra released a full statement announcing that it had postponed its next scheduled match, which was set for Sunday. The club also confirmed it was working with the league and the Andorran government to provide assistance and support following the tragedy.
Andorra said it was committed to offering its full cooperation and “the necessary support during these very difficult times.” The tragic incident has left both clubs and the Spanish soccer community mourning the loss of De Miguel, whose death followed a collision that unfolded in the final moments of Monday’s match.
