MLS Action as Charlotte FC Continues Late Season Push
Charlotte FC continued its impressive late season run, delivering a dominant 4-0 victory over Orlando City SC on Saturday, October 31, at Bank of America Stadium. The Crown controlled the match from the opening minutes, scoring in both halves before adding two late goals to secure their second consecutive 4-0 victory.
Head coach Dean Smith emphasized the importance of starting quickly, and his team delivered on that objective. After goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina made an early save to prevent Orlando from taking the lead, Charlotte capitalized on its first major opportunity.
Allan Saint-Maximin drew a foul on the left wing following a Charlotte counterattack, setting up a free kick just outside the penalty area. Ashley Westwood delivered a perfectly placed ball over a crowd of jumping players, allowing Henry Kessler to rise above the defense and head it into the net. Kessler sprinted toward the corner flag to celebrate his second goal of the season, giving Charlotte an early 1-0 advantage.
Kessler Opens the Scoring as Charlotte Controls the First Half
Charlotte continued to attack through the wings, using corners, crosses and set pieces to pressure Orlando’s defense. Idan Toklomati frequently served as the target on those deliveries, although he couldn’t generate enough power on his headers to beat the goalkeeper.
In the 37th minute, Liel Abada nearly added another goal when he connected with an excellent cross from Maxi. The delivery curved perfectly toward the Israeli winger, but Abada mistimed his jump and couldn’t direct the ball on target.
Five minutes later, Westwood nearly doubled the advantage. Following a Pep Biel corner, the ball bounced toward the top of the penalty area, where Westwood unleashed a powerful volley that narrowly missed to the left of the goal.
Orlando had opportunities of its own, but Charlotte’s defensive organization limited the Lions to shots from outside the penalty area, making life easier for Kahlina. Orlando’s best opportunity of the first half came in the 41st minute when Iago got a shot away following a corner, only for Kahlina to make an important save near the right post. Charlotte carried its 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Maxi Doubles Charlotte’s Lead With Another Fast Start
The Crown wasted little time extending their lead after the break. In the 49th minute, Maxi made it 2-0 with an impressive individual effort that exposed Orlando’s defensive approach. The French winger received the ball near midfield and drove toward the penalty area, taking advantage of the space in front of him as Orlando’s defenders backed off to contain his shooting ability. Maxi continued his run unchecked before calmly sending a shot into the bottom-left corner.
It was his second goal for Charlotte and his first at home, giving the hosts an important two-goal cushion. Orlando attempted to respond and push its way back into the match, but the Lions struggled to create dangerous opportunities. Kahlina remained sharp throughout the contest, finishing with seven saves to preserve Charlotte’s clean sheet.
Charlotte, meanwhile, continued searching for a third goal to put the match out of reach. Biel nearly delivered in spectacular fashion with a curling effort from just outside the penalty area, but his shot clipped the crossbar.
Doucouré and Aloko Complete the 4-0 Rout
With Charlotte looking to maintain its attacking pressure, Smith turned to his bench for fresh legs. Rodolfo Aloko entered the match for the injured Abada, while Abdoulaye Doucouré replaced Djibril Diani to make his second appearance for The Crown. Aloko immediately made an impact, finding himself in a one-on-one situation with an Orlando defender as he raced toward goal.
Just as he prepared to shoot, the defender brought him down, earning Charlotte a penalty. Maxi stepped up with an opportunity to score his second goal of the night and complete a brace. Orlando’s goalkeeper managed to save the penalty, but the rebound fell directly to Doucouré, who finished the opportunity to score his first goal for Charlotte FC. The Crown weren’t finished.
Charlotte continued pressing forward, and Aloko eventually got his reward. Tyger Smalls delivered a pass into the attacking area, where Aloko connected with a first-touch volley and sent the ball into the net to make it 4-0. The late goals put the finishing touches on another convincing Charlotte performance, giving the club consecutive 4-0 victories and sending Orlando City home with a disappointing Halloween defeat.
Charlotte Turns Its Attention to Inter Miami on Decision Day

The Decision Day showdown is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Nu Stadium, with both clubs looking to finish the regular season on a strong note. After back-to-back 4-0 victories, Charlotte will enter the final matchday with plenty of confidence as it looks to carry its momentum into the postseason.
