Griezmann Shines as Orlando City Secures Dramatic Late Victory
Iván Angulo scored the go ahead goal in the 89th minute, Antoine Griezmann contributed a goal and an assist, and goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau made 12 saves to lead Orlando City to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday night.
Angulo delivered the decisive moment on a counterattack, combining with Martín Ojeda before finishing a first-time shot from the center of the field to put Orlando City ahead for good. The victory lifted Orlando City to 11-13-4, while Columbus fell to 8-15-5 after surrendering a late winner in a back-and-forth contest.
Orlando built an early two-goal advantage before Columbus fought back to level the match at 2-2. However, Angulo’s late strike and Crépeau’s outstanding performance in goal proved decisive as Orlando City secured three valuable points.
Orlando Strikes Early Before Griezmann Doubles the Lead
Orlando City wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, with Harvey Sarajian giving the hosts a 1-0 lead just 46 seconds into the match. Making his first career start in his 10th MLS appearance, Sarajian finished a cross from Griezmann with a first-touch shot from near the penalty spot. The goal was Sarajian’s second in MLS and gave Orlando an immediate boost.
Columbus responded in the eighth minute when Taha Habroune timed his run perfectly to meet a ball played ahead by Santiago Rodríguez. With Crépeau charging off his line, Habroune beat the Orlando goalkeeper to bring the Crew back within 2-1.
Griezmann restored Orlando’s two-goal cushion in the 16th minute, finishing to make it 2-1 and cap a productive opening stretch for the hosts. The French forward’s goal and assist highlighted his growing influence since joining Orlando City in July.
Columbus Fights Back to Tie the Match
Despite falling behind early, Columbus continued to create opportunities and eventually found its way back into the contest. Habroune played a key role again in the 53rd minute, setting up Brais Méndez on a counterattack. Méndez found himself with an open net and finished the opportunity to bring Columbus level at 2-2.
The Crew’s comeback put Orlando under pressure, but Crépeau repeatedly came up with crucial saves to keep his team in the match. His 12-save performance was instrumental in preventing Columbus from taking control after erasing the early deficit. Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte finished with five saves, but the Crew could not find a third goal to complete the comeback.
Angulo Delivers the Decisive Blow in the 89th Minute
With the match seemingly headed toward a draw, Orlando City produced one final counterattack to claim the victory. Angulo pushed a pass wide to the left for Ojeda, who immediately played a first-touch ball back into Angulo’s path. Angulo finished with a one-timer from the center of the field in the 89th minute, sending Orlando City ahead 3-2 and delivering a dramatic late winner.
The goal capped a resilient performance from Orlando, which overcame Columbus’ second-half equalizer to secure the victory in the closing minutes. Griezmann, 35, continues to make an impact since arriving in July. He now has nine goals and five assists in 12 career MLS appearances, providing Orlando City with an experienced attacking presence.
Next MLS Match for Orlando City and Columbus
Both teams return to action Wednesday, with Columbus hosting Charlotte while Orlando City travels to Toronto. Orlando will look to build on Saturday’s dramatic victory as it continues its MLS campaign, while Columbus will aim to regroup after conceding the decisive goal in the final minutes of a hard-fought match.
