Messi Reaches 25 MLS Goals as Miami Extends Winning Streak to Three Games
Lionel Messi continued his remarkable season Saturday, scoring twice in the second half to lead Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory over Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The eight time Ballon d’Or winner raised his league leading goal total to 25, delivering another standout performance as Miami extended its winning streak to three games.
After Mexico international Germán Berterame gave Miami the lead in the 45th minute, Messi took over following halftime, scoring twice in a four-minute span to put the visitors firmly in control. Former Inter Miami forward Fafà Picault converted a late penalty for Atlanta, but the hosts could not mount a comeback.
The victory further strengthened Miami’s position in the Eastern Conference playoff race. The club clinched a postseason berth Wednesday and remains second in the standings behind runaway leader Nashville.
Messi Delivers Two Trademark Solo Goals
Messi broke the game open in the 56th minute with a familiar display of close control, creativity and finishing. Starting on the right wing, the Argentine star drove toward the middle, exchanged passes with Berterame near the edge of the penalty area and danced past an Atlanta defender before firing a low shot into the net.
Four minutes later, Messi struck again, this time finishing a breakaway opportunity created by Luis Suárez. The former Barcelona teammates combined to exploit Atlanta’s defensive vulnerabilities, with Messi once again leaving a defender behind before beating goalkeeper Lucas Hoyos with his left foot.
The brace showcased Messi’s continued ability to change a game in moments, turning Miami’s narrow advantage into a commanding lead and putting Atlanta on the back foot for the remainder of the contest. Picault, who previously played for Miami, converted a late penalty to provide Atlanta with a consolation goal, but it was not enough to change the outcome.
Messi Extends His Lead in the Golden Boot Race
Messi’s two goals brought his MLS season total to 25, giving him a six-goal advantage in the race for the league’s Golden Boot at the end of Saturday’s match. He also remained tied for the league lead in assists with 15, alongside Los Angeles FC’s Son Heung-Min, after receiving credit for a secondary assist on Berterame’s opening goal.
The Argentine superstar also made MLS history, becoming the first player in league history to record at least 15 assists in three consecutive seasons. His latest performance extended his streak of recording a goal contribution to 13 consecutive matches, tying the second-longest such run of his career across club and international competition.
Saturday’s brace also pushed Messi’s career goal total to 936, bringing the 39-year-old closer to the remarkable milestone of 1,000 career goals. His coach has expressed confidence that the forward can reach the landmark.
Another Memorable Night in Atlanta
The match provided Messi with another memorable occasion at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where he had not played since the 2026 World Cup semifinal in July. During that match, Messi delivered two late assists to help Argentina secure a dramatic victory over England.
Saturday’s performance continued his strong run since bidding farewell to Argentina’s national team in a friendly against Benin earlier this month. Messi has scored four goals in three games since the international farewell, demonstrating that his scoring touch remains as sharp as ever. His continued production has been central to Miami’s recent success as the club builds momentum heading into the postseason.
Miami Builds Momentum as Atlanta Faces Playoff Pressure
Inter Miami has won three consecutive matches and secured its place in the playoffs, leaving the club focused on improving its position in the Eastern Conference standings. With Messi leading the league in goals and continuing to contribute as a playmaker, Miami remains a dangerous opponent as the regular season approaches its conclusion.
Atlanta United, meanwhile, faces a much more difficult path. Under coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, Messi’s former coach with both Miami and Argentina, Atlanta sits 14th in the Eastern Conference and faces an uphill battle to reach the postseason.
The 3-1 defeat underscored the gap between the teams, with Miami capitalizing on its attacking opportunities while Atlanta struggled to contain Messi after halftime. Inter Miami will look to extend its winning streak next Saturday when it visits the New York Red Bulls. Atlanta must regroup quickly as it attempts to revive its playoff hopes and close the gap in the Eastern Conference race.
