Inter Miami Salvages 2-2 Draw Against FC Cincinnati but Falls to Third in Eastern Conference

Inter Miami CF Rallies Late for Draw

Inter Miami CF rallied late to salvage a 2-2 draw against FC Cincinnati on Wednesday night, with Riquelme Fillipi scoring his first MLS goal in the 90th minute to cap a dramatic finish. However, the defending MLS Cup champions still dropped to third place in the Eastern Conference standings, setting up a crucial showdown against the New England Revolution on Sunday.

Luis Suárez gave Miami the lead in the 61st minute, but Cincinnati responded with two goals in a six minute span late in the second half to put the hosts on the brink of a costly defeat. Fillipi’s equalizer rescued a point for Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, although the result was not enough to keep the club in second place.

New England moved into the conference’s second spot with a 3-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday, bringing its points total to 58. The Revolution now hold a two-point advantage over Miami with two regular season matches remaining for the Herons.

Suárez Gives Miami the Lead Before Cincinnati’s Late Surge

Inter Miami broke through in the 61st minute when Suárez found the back of the net to put the visitors ahead 1-0. The veteran striker delivered at a critical moment, giving Miami an opportunity to strengthen its position in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Cincinnati, however, refused to go away and found another gear during the final 10 minutes. Kenji Mboma Dem scored a stunning goal in the 80th minute to bring the hosts level, shifting the momentum and putting pressure on Miami’s defense.

Six minutes later, Samuel Gidi scored his first MLS goal, finishing a counterattack from the top of the penalty area to give Cincinnati a 2-1 advantage. The hosts suddenly appeared poised to pull off an upset, while Miami faced the prospect of losing valuable ground in the standings with the postseason approaching.

Fillipi’s First MLS Goal Rescues a Point

With time running out, Miami mounted a late push to avoid defeat. Fillipi delivered the decisive moment in the 90th minute, connecting from the left side of the penalty area to beat Cincinnati’s defense and make it 2-2.

The finish came from nearly the same area of the field where Suárez had scored earlier, giving Miami a dramatic equalizer and securing a point on the road. Fillipi’s first MLS goal proved vital for the Herons, who had struggled to contain Cincinnati’s late attacking surge.

Cincinnati nearly snatched the victory in stoppage time when Evander found a promising shooting opportunity from around the penalty spot. However, Inter Miami defender Ian Fray got his body in front of the shot and deflected the ball away from danger. Cincinnati’s ensuing corner kick failed to produce another opportunity, and the final whistle confirmed the 2-2 draw.

The result was a missed opportunity for Cincinnati to move closer to securing a playoff berth. The club entered the match needing a victory over Miami and a Columbus loss against Dallas to formally clinch a postseason spot. Although the draw did not complete that objective, Cincinnati still strengthened its playoff position.

Inter Miami Faces Crucial Match Against New England

Miami’s draw carries significant implications for the Eastern Conference standings. New England’s victory over the Red Bulls moved the Revolution to 58 points, two ahead of Miami, which now sits third with two regular-season games remaining.

The teams will meet Sunday in Foxborough, Massachusetts, in a matchup that could determine the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and have major implications for the MLS Cup playoffs. The meeting will be Miami’s next-to-last regular-season game. The Herons will then return home to face Charlotte on Nov. 7 to close out their regular-season schedule.

With the top playoff positions still at stake, Sunday’s contest represents a critical opportunity for Messi and Miami to regain second place and improve their postseason positioning. The draw against Cincinnati kept Miami from leaving empty handed, but the club will need a stronger result against New England to regain control of its immediate playoff seeding outlook.

MLS Announces Miami vs Cincinnati Season Opener for 2027

Before Wednesday’s match, Major League Soccer announced that FC Cincinnati will visit Inter Miami on Feb. 19 for the opening game of the league’s shortened 2027 season. The sprint season will serve as a bridge between MLS’s current calendar and a new schedule more closely aligned with international soccer leagues, which is set to begin in July 2027.

For now, Miami’s attention turns to Sunday’s high stakes matchup against New England. After escaping Cincinnati with a late equalizer, the Herons remain in contention for a top-two Eastern Conference finish, but their margin for error is shrinking as the regular season approaches its conclusion.
