George Santos Pleads Guilty to Fraud Charges, Faces Six Years in Prison and Over $570,000 in Restitution
CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — Former Congressman George Santos, who notoriously fabricated significant portions of his biography during his brief political career, pleaded guilty on Monday to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Santos, 36, admitted in a tearful courtroom confession that his actions were driven by ambition and resulted in the deception of voters, donors, and even his own family members. “I betrayed the trust of my constituents and supporters. The charges stem from a federal investigation that revealed Santos had stolen the identities of 11 individuals, including family members, to fraudulently secure donations for his political campaign. On the same day as his guilty plea, a Manhattan federal judge dismissed a lawsuit he had filed against comedian Jimmy Kimmel, ABC, and Disney, alleging copyright infringement. The judge ruled that Kimmel’s use of Santos’ Cameo videos for comedic purposes constituted fair use.
