Republicans Have the Dumbest Alternative Super Bowl Halftime Show Planned

Turning Point USA’s Alternative Super Bowl Halftime Show Draws Mockery, Limited Attention

As millions of viewers prepare to watch Bad Bunny headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show on Sunday, a far smaller audience is expected to tune into a conservative counterprogram organized by Turning Point USA, highlighting the widening cultural divide surrounding one of the most watched entertainment events in the world.

The right-wing group announced it will air an “All-American Halftime Show” on conservative media platforms and social streams, positioning the event as an alternative for viewers angered by the NFL’s choice of Bad Bunny. The lineup is headlined by Kid Rock, alongside country artists Brantley Gilbert and Lee Brice.

Backlash to Bad Bunny Sparked Counterprogramming

Conservative outrage began shortly after the NFL revealed Bad Bunny as the official halftime headliner. Critics objected to the Puerto Rican artist performing in Spanish during what they described as a quintessentially American event, labeling him “unpatriotic” for his past criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and his public support for LGBTQ+ communities. The backlash escalated into petitions demanding his removal. When those efforts failed, Turning Point USA moved forward with its own halftime production.

“The All-American Halftime Show is an opportunity for all Americans to enjoy a halftime show with no agenda other than to celebrate faith, family, and freedom,” said Turning Point spokesperson Andrew Kolvet.

A Lineup That Struggles to Match the Moment

While Kid Rock remains a recognizable name, critics note that the alternative show lacks the cultural reach and global appeal of the NFL’s official production. Rock’s most recent Billboard Hot 100 appearance came nearly a decade ago, and the remaining performers primarily appeal to niche audiences within country and conservative music circles. Rock, a longtime supporter of President Donald Trump, performed at campaign rallies and at Trump’s 2025 inauguration. He framed the competing show as an underdog effort.

“We’re approaching this show like David and Goliath,” Rock said in a statement. “Competing with the pro football machine and a global pop superstar is almost impossible… or is it?”

He also contrasted his performance with Bad Bunny’s planned show, dismissively referencing the singer’s use of Spanish and flamboyant stage presence.

Limited Reach, Broader Cultural Implications

Media analysts say the alternative halftime show is unlikely to make a measurable dent in Super Bowl viewership, which routinely exceeds 100 million viewers in the United States alone. Instead, they argue, the effort underscores how even mass-market entertainment has become a flashpoint in America’s political culture wars.

Turning Point USA, co-founded by Charlie Kirk, has increasingly positioned itself as a cultural counterweight to mainstream entertainment, framing pop culture through a partisan lens. Despite heavy promotion in conservative media spaces, early indicators suggest the alternative show will function more as a symbolic protest than a serious competitor.

As Super Bowl Sunday approaches, the contrast is stark: a globally dominant pop star commanding one of the largest stages in entertainment and a politically motivated counterprogram that critics say highlights the limits of grievance-driven culture as mass entertainment.
