Several People Hospitalized After Florida Boat Explosion

Boat Explosion

A serene afternoon on the water turned into a scene of chaos and panic when a boat docked in Fort Lauderdale exploded on Monday, sending flames and thick smoke billowing into the sky. Eleven people, including two children, were rushed to the hospital in the wake of the explosion, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. near the Las Olas Marina, a popular boating destination along the Intracoastal Waterway. Witnesses described a sudden, deafening blast that rocked the docks and sent nearby boaters scrambling for safety.

“People were screaming, jumping off the dock into the water,” said Carla Jennings, a tourist from Ohio who was walking along the marina at the time. “There was a fireball and smoke everywhere. It was terrifying.”

Victims Rushed to Hospital

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue teams responded within minutes. First responders encountered a chaotic scene: a burning vessel, injured passengers, and frightened bystanders. Emergency crews worked quickly to extinguish the flames and triage the injured. Eleven individuals were transported to area hospitals, including Broward Health Medical Center and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

Among those injured were two children, whose conditions have not yet been released. The ages of the victims range from young children to adults, though officials have not released their identities. Some were believed to be onboard the vessel at the time of the explosion, while others may have been nearby and injured by debris or the blast wave.

“Anytime we have children involved in a situation like this, it adds a layer of urgency and concern,” said Battalion Chief Stephen Gollan of Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue during a brief press conference Monday evening.

Investigation Underway

The cause of the explosion remains unknown. Authorities from the U.S. Coast Guard and Fort Lauderdale Fire Prevention Bureau are conducting a joint investigation. Initial assessments suggest that the explosion may have originated in the engine compartment, but no conclusions have been reached.

“We are looking at all possible causes, including mechanical failure, fuel leaks, and human error,” Gollan said. “This is a very active investigation, and we are working diligently to determine what happened and why.”

Investigators are urging anyone who may have witnessed the explosion or captured it on video to contact the Fort Lauderdale Fire Marshal’s office. Surveillance footage from nearby docks and private boats is also being reviewed.

Community Reacts

The incident has shaken the local boating community, particularly as the summer season kicks off and recreational boating activity ramps up along South Florida’s coast.

“This could have happened to any of us,” said Jeff Morales, a charter boat captain who docks nearby. “Boaters need to be extra vigilant about safety—especially with fuel systems, electrical components, and ventilation. This kind of tragedy is a wake-up call.”

Local authorities are reminding boat owners and operators to conduct routine inspections, particularly of fuel lines, electrical wiring, and ventilation systems—especially before starting the engine.

Looking Ahead

As of Tuesday morning, the area surrounding the explosion remained cordoned off for investigation and cleanup. Officials say the damaged vessel has been stabilized and will be towed for further examination.

While the victims continue to receive medical care, the incident has left many in the community rattled, grateful for the fast response of emergency personnel, and eager for answers.
