Oklahoma State Stuns No. 6 Oregon 39-31 in Wild Week 2 Upset

Cowboys Deliver One of the Season’s Biggest Surprises

Oklahoma State produced the first true stunner of the 2026 college football season Saturday, shocking No. 6 Oregon 39-31 at Boone Pickens Stadium in a game that ended with delirious Cowboys fans storming the field and tearing down the west goal post.

Quarterback Drew Mestemaker led the way in a remarkable bounce-back performance, throwing for 317 yards and two touchdowns while adding 109 rushing yards and another score. After the final whistle, fans swarmed the field to celebrate Oklahoma State’s first victory over an FBS opponent in 21 games.

The goal post did not survive the celebration. Fans tore it down, carried it to nearby Theta Pond and tossed it into the water as Oklahoma State celebrated a victory that few outside the program saw coming.

The Cowboys entered the game after going 1-11 last season, a disastrous campaign that cost longtime coach Mike Gundy his job. New coach Eric Morris then suffered a 24-10 loss to Tulsa in his Oklahoma State debut. His first victory with the Cowboys, however, will be remembered for a long time. Oklahoma State also extended its remarkable streak to 31 consecutive wins in home openers.

Mestemaker Leads Oklahoma State’s Offensive Explosion

Mestemaker, who played for Morris at North Texas last season and is one of 88 new players on Oklahoma State’s roster, bounced back emphatically after a disappointing performance in the opener.

The Cowboys dominated the first half, taking a 24-17 lead into halftime. Mestemaker had already thrown for 179 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 75 yards on Oklahoma State’s opening play. Overall, the Cowboys piled up 554 total yards compared with just 281 for Oregon, an extraordinary difference against a team that entered the season ranked No. 2 in the preseason.

Oklahoma State’s offense continued to make plays when the game was on the line. After Oregon quarterback Dante Moore connected with Evan Stewart for a 38-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give the Ducks a 31-30 lead, Mestemaker answered immediately. He directed a 75-yard scoring drive and finished it by launching himself over defenders on a 10-yard touchdown run, putting the Cowboys back ahead 36-31.

Oklahoma State failed to convert the ensuing two-point attempt, but the defense came through when it mattered most. After forcing Oregon to turn the ball over on downs, Sam Keltner connected on his fourth field goal of the afternoon to give the Cowboys a 39-31 advantage.

Oregon’s Defense Keeps Ducks Within Reach

Despite Oklahoma State’s offensive dominance, Oregon repeatedly found ways to stay in the game. The Ducks were outgained 353-101 in the first half, but their defense created opportunities by intercepting two tipped passes.

One of those turnovers became a game-changing touchdown when linebacker Devon Jackson returned the interception 96 yards to cut Oklahoma State’s lead to 7-3. Later in the second quarter, Matayo Uliagalelei intercepted Mestemaker at the Oklahoma State 11-yard line and returned the ball to the 1. Jordan Davison scored on the following play, trimming the Cowboys’ advantage to 17-14.

Oregon’s defense prevented the game from getting completely out of hand despite Oklahoma State’s overwhelming yardage advantage.

Dante Moore Rallies Oregon, But Ducks Fall Short

Moore struggled badly early, completing just one of his first seven passes. The senior quarterback ultimately settled down and helped Oregon make a serious comeback attempt.

He led the Ducks on a 75-yard touchdown drive to open the third quarter, connecting with Dakorian Moore for a 36-yard score that brought Oregon within 27-24. Moore later gave Oregon the lead again with his 38-yard touchdown pass to Stewart early in the fourth quarter. But the Ducks could not stop Mestemaker and the Cowboys from responding.

Moore finished 14 of 21 for 191 yards and two touchdown passes. It was a pedestrian performance for a quarterback who elected to remain at Oregon rather than enter the NFL draft.

A Massive Blow to Oregon’s Playoff Hopes

Oregon entered the game favored by 23½ points and looking to build momentum toward another national championship pursuit. Instead, the Ducks leave Stillwater with a stunning loss and significant questions about their ability to compete at the highest level.

The Ducks are now 1-1 after already looking vulnerable in their season-opening home victory over Boise State. Saturday’s defeat makes that performance look even more concerning. For Oklahoma State, the victory represents something much bigger than a single upset.

After a 1-11 season, a coaching change and a disappointing opening-game loss, the Cowboys have suddenly delivered a statement victory against one of the nation’s highest-ranked teams. The game also came after a 90-minute rain delay, making the eventual celebration even more memorable for the Oklahoma State faithful.

Mestemaker safely escaped the field after being surrounded by fans. The goal post, meanwhile, became a souvenir of sorts in Theta Pond. For Morris and Oklahoma State, it was a victory that changed the mood around the program in a matter of hours. For Oregon, it was a warning that preseason expectations and national championship aspirations mean little once the games begin.
