Braves Outlast Phillies 6-5 in 11-Inning Thriller to Extend NL East Lead

The Atlanta Braves outlasted the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5 in 11 innings Friday night, winning the opening game of a pivotal National League East series and extending their division lead over Philadelphia to five games.

Drake Baldwin delivered the decisive blow in the bottom of the 11th inning, doubling to center field to score Ha-Seong Kim from first base and send the Braves to the dramatic victory. The teams had split a four-game series in Philadelphia that began the previous Friday, adding even more importance to the latest matchup.

Braves Rally to Force Extra Innings

Philadelphia appeared poised to take the lead in the top of the 11th when Luis Arraez lined a single to left field off Atlanta reliever Didier Fuentes. The hit scored designated runner Garrett Stubbs and put the Phillies ahead 5-4.

The Braves quickly answered in the bottom half. Kim lined a single off Brooks Raley to score Ozzie Albies and tie the game at 5-5. Baldwin followed with his game-winning double, bringing Kim home from first and giving Atlanta a walk-off victory.

The Braves had already rallied in the ninth inning after Phillies right-hander Jonathan Bowlan was unable to protect a 3-2 Philadelphia lead. Bowlan surrendered a one out single to Mike Yastrzemski, and pinch-runner DaShawn Keirsey Jr. scored from first when Sean Murphy singled up the middle and center fielder Derek Hill committed a fielding error.

Olson and Riley Provide the Power

Aaron Nola surrendered two important home runs for Philadelphia. Matt Olson opened the scoring with a solo homer in the first inning, while Austin Riley added another solo shot in the seventh to give Atlanta a 3-2 lead at the time. Atlanta’s offense ultimately needed every run as the game turned into an extra-inning battle.

Sale Strong Despite One Difficult Inning

Braves left-hander Chris Sale delivered seven innings, allowing three runs on just three hits. His biggest trouble came with two outs in the second inning when Philadelphia loaded the bases.

Edmundo Sosa started the rally with a single before Sale walked Bryan De La Cruz and hit J.T. Realmuto with a pitch. With the bases loaded, Hill doubled off the center-field wall, driving in all three runners and giving the Phillies a 3-1 lead.

Sale settled down after the difficult inning and kept Atlanta within striking distance, setting the stage for the bullpen and the late-game comeback.

Braves Lose Lane Thomas to Injured List

Atlanta also announced before the game that outfielder Lane Thomas had been placed on the 10 day injured list with a strained left intercostal muscle. The move was retroactive to Tuesday.

The Braves will have to navigate the injury while continuing their push in the NL East, with Philadelphia now five games behind following Friday night’s loss.

Game Delayed by Rain

The game began 47 minutes late because of rain, but the weather eventually cleared enough for the NL East rivals to begin their highly anticipated series.

Before the game, the Braves and Phillies also held a ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Kayla Bergeron, a survivor of the attacks in New York who now lives in Atlanta, threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Braves Strike First in Key NL East Series

With the victory, Atlanta gained an important early advantage in a series carrying significant implications for the NL East race. The Braves showed resilience throughout the night, overcoming Philadelphia’s three-run second inning, a late Phillies lead and an extra inning deficit before Baldwin’s walk-off double finally ended the marathon.

The Braves will look to build on their five game division lead as the series continues, while the Phillies will try to respond and prevent Atlanta from creating even more separation atop the NL East.
