Junior Caminero’s Walk-Off Homer Sends Rays to Playoffs With 3-1 Win Over Astros

Junior Caminero launched a game ending, two run home run in the ninth inning Friday night, lifting the Rays to a 3-1 victory over the Houston Astros and making Tampa Bay the first team in Major League Baseball to clinch a playoff berth. Caminero’s 417-foot drive to left center field off Bryan Abreu sparked a celebration at home plate as the Rays celebrated another postseason appearance.

Caminero Delivers the Moment

Caminero’s walk-off blast was his 40th home run of the season, making the 23-year-old one of the most dangerous young power hitters in baseball. He hit 45 home runs in 2025, his first full season in the majors, and has now joined Aaron Judge as the only active major leaguers with consecutive 40-homer seasons.

The home run also capped a remarkable comeback for a Tampa Bay offense that had managed only two hits through the first eight innings. Jonathan Aranda started the ninth-inning rally with a one out double off the right field wall. Jonny DeLuca entered as a pinch runner, and Caminero followed by crushing Abreu’s next pitch over the wall to send the Rays to victory.

Rays Pitching Keeps Houston in Check

Tampa Bay’s pitching staff kept the Astros from building an early advantage. Drew Rasmussen delivered seven strong innings, allowing eight hits and one run while striking out four and walking none.

Houston broke through in the fourth inning when Isaac Paredes doubled and scored on a grounder by Yainer Diaz. But Rasmussen and the Rays’ bullpen prevented the Astros from adding to their lead. Bryan Baker worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn the victory, improving to 2-2 on the season.

The Rays took advantage of one of their limited offensive opportunities in the fifth inning when Victor Mesa Jr. homered to tie the game. Tampa Bay’s offense struggled to generate much else until the decisive ninth.

Houston used a bullpen-heavy approach after opener Miguel Ullola worked the first inning. Bryan King recorded the next four outs, and Ethan Pecko followed with 5 2/3 innings before Abreu entered in the ninth and surrendered Caminero’s walk-off homer.

With the victory, AL-best Tampa Bay improved to 88-59 and officially secured a place in the postseason. The Rays have been one of the American League’s most consistent teams throughout the 2026 season, and Friday night’s dramatic victory provided a fitting way to punch their ticket to October.

Astros Play Without Yordan Alvarez

Houston was without slugger Yordan Alvarez, who is chasing the American League Triple Crown but currently trails Caminero by two home runs.

Alvarez missed Friday’s game after twisting his right ankle during Thursday’s victory over Philadelphia. Astros manager Joe Espada said the injury is not considered serious. The Astros will look to rebound Saturday as they continue their push in the American League playoff race.

The Astros will send right-hander Peter Lambert (8-8, 3.67 ERA) to the mound Saturday, while the Rays will counter with left-hander Ian Seymour (9-6, 4.33 ERA).

After becoming the first team in the majors to clinch a playoff berth, Tampa Bay will enter the weekend with postseason baseball officially secured and plenty of momentum heading toward October.
