A Daily Ritual on Fort Lauderdale Beach
For the past three years, Rejean Lapierre has walked the stretch of Fort Lauderdale Beach along A-1-A from Sunrise Boulevard to Oakland Park Boulevard, orange bucket and garbage grabber in hand. Every single day, rain or shine, he picks up trash left behind by beachgoers. What started as a suggestion from his Rotary district—to make an impact by picking up just one item each day—quickly grew into a personal mission for Lapierre.
A Labor of Love
Lapierre isn’t paid, nor is he required to do this work. He does it out of passion and pride for his community. His wife often jokes that he goes too far—even picking up cigarette butts—but Lapierre believes that no piece of litter is too small to matter. “People are just destroying our beautiful treasure,” he said. “I just want to keep my paradise a paradise.”
Health Challenges and Resilience
Recently, Lapierre’s daily walks came to a halt when he had to undergo a heart procedure. The break from his cleanup routine was tough on him emotionally, but he remains optimistic. He hopes to be cleared by doctors next month so he can return to the beach, bucket in hand, and continue his mission of keeping Fort Lauderdale’s shoreline pristine.
The Power of Gratitude
Though his work is often solitary, Lapierre finds motivation in the small gestures of appreciation from strangers. Beachgoers regularly thank him, and those words of encouragement keep him going. “Thank you, thank you every morning,” he said, recalling the comments that fuel his determination. For Lapierre, those moments of recognition prove that his efforts matter to the community.
Why His Mission Matters
Lapierre’s story is more than just one man’s commitment—it’s a reminder of how individual action can create real change. His consistency has kept thousands of pieces of trash off South Florida’s beaches, protecting not only the local environment but also the tourist economy that depends on clean shorelines. His work is a grassroots example of environmental stewardship, proving that small, daily actions add up to a lasting impact.
