Spain Stuns Portugal in Stoppage Time, Ends Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup Dream

Spain booked its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals in dramatic fashion, defeating Portugal 1-0 in a tense Round of 16 clash in Dallas as substitute Mikel Merino struck an injury-time winner to shatter Portuguese hearts and likely bring an emotional end to Cristiano Ronaldo’s legendary World Cup career.

For nearly 90 minutes, the Iberian rivals battled through a tactical chess match with few clear-cut opportunities. But just as extra time appeared inevitable, Merino emerged as Spain’s hero. The Arsenal midfielder reacted quickest after a well worked free kick, timing his run into the penalty area before calmly firing past Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa to send Spain into the last eight.

The goal sparked wild celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters while leaving Ronaldo devastated. The 41 year old superstar, playing what is widely expected to be his final FIFA World Cup, was left in tears as the final whistle confirmed Portugal’s elimination.

Spain dictated possession and looked the more dangerous side throughout the contest, patiently probing Portugal’s disciplined defensive setup.

Their first major opportunity arrived in the 16th minute. Rising teenage sensation Lamine Yamal cut inside from the right and forced Costa into a spectacular save. Moments later, Álex Baena pounced on the rebound only for Costa to somehow recover and tip the second effort around the post, producing one of the saves of the tournament.

Despite Spain’s territorial advantage, Portugal remained dangerous on the counterattack.

Ronaldo, largely quiet during the opening half, nearly made his mark after surviving a challenge inside the penalty area. Moments after getting back to his feet following contact from Rodri, the Portuguese captain squeezed a shot from a tight angle that forced Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón into an important save.

Portugal came even closer four minutes before halftime when a cleverly designed set piece caught Spain’s defense off guard. Nuno Mendes unleashed a strike that took a heavy deflection off Pedro Porro before crashing against the crossbar, giving Spain a fortunate escape.

The second half initially lacked urgency before bursting into life around the hour mark. Portugal surrendered possession deep inside its own half, allowing Dani Olmo to quickly feed Pedri, whose powerful effort from outside the penalty area was deflected over the crossbar by Renato Veiga.

Baena later tested Costa with a low drive, while Yamal whipped in a dangerous free kick that the Portuguese goalkeeper brilliantly tipped over the bar. Spain continued to press but struggled to find the finishing touch.

With only eight minutes remaining, Mikel Oyarzabal squandered what appeared to be the game’s best opportunity. Played through brilliantly by Olmo, the Spanish forward seemed to assume he had been caught offside and casually dragged his shot wide of the right post despite the flag staying down.

It looked like a miss Spain would regret. Instead, Spain continued to increase the pressure. Olmo came close again, Ferran Torres created chaos with a dangerous low cross across the six-yard box, and Portugal’s defense appeared increasingly stretched.

Then, in stoppage time, Spain finally found the breakthrough. Following a quickly taken free kick, Merino made an intelligent run into the penalty area, slipping behind the Portuguese defense before confidently firing past Costa to ignite celebrations throughout the stadium.

The goal rewarded Spain’s persistence and punished Portugal for an increasingly conservative second-half approach.

Portugal mounted one final desperate attack after the restart, nearly forcing extra time when Bernardo Silva rose to meet a Sergio Conceição cross, but his looping header drifted narrowly over the crossbar.

Moments later, the final whistle blew. While Spain celebrated another step toward a fourth World Cup title, the night belonged emotionally to Ronaldo.

The five time Ballon d’Or winner struggled to influence the match, spending much of the evening isolated as Spain controlled possession and denied him meaningful service.

Although he produced a handful of threatening moments including his first-half effort that tested Simón Portugal’s attack never consistently threatened the Spanish defense.

As the final whistle sounded, Ronaldo’s dream of finally lifting the World Cup trophy came to an emotional conclusion, ending one of international football’s greatest careers without the sport’s ultimate prize.

Spain now advances to the World Cup quarterfinals after another composed defensive performance and a display that showcased both patience and resilience.

Yamal continued to demonstrate why he is considered one of football’s brightest young stars, while Dani Olmo orchestrated much of Spain’s creativity. Costa’s outstanding goalkeeping kept Portugal alive for nearly the entire match, but Merino’s late heroics ultimately proved decisive.

For Portugal, the defeat will be remembered as a missed opportunity after choosing a cautious tactical approach for much of the second half.

For Spain, it was another statement victory and another step toward World Cup glory.

And for Cristiano Ronaldo, it was a heartbreaking ending to one of the most remarkable international careers the game has ever witnessed.
