Stowers’ Three-Homer Masterclass Powers Marlins Past Orioles, 11-1

Kyle Stowers made his former club pay in historic fashion on Sunday, belting three home runs and driving in six runs to lead the Miami Marlins to a dominant 11-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Stowers, the Marlins’ All-Star left fielder, became the first Marlins player to hit three homers in a game since Brian Anderson on Sept. 18, 2020, against Washington. The 27-year-old also joins Mike Lowell (2004) and Cody Ross (2006) as the only Marlins to accomplish the feat.

Baltimore, which hadn’t dropped consecutive games since July 1-2, couldn’t contain its former second-round pick. Stowers started the scoring with a solo homer to right in the second inning off Orioles starter Brandon Young (0-4). An inning later, he punished Young’s first-pitch curveball, launching it 398 feet to right-center for a two-run blast.

Stowers capped off his historic day in the fifth, working a 2-2 count before hammering a towering shot over the right-field scoreboard to put the Marlins up 7-0 and chase Young from the game. The blast was Stowers’ fourth multi-homer game of the season and his 19th home run overall — both career highs before the All-Star break.

The Marlins offense didn’t stop there. Otto Lopez followed Stowers’ second homer with a solo shot, marking only the second time Miami has hit back-to-back homers this season. Stowers finished with his first career five-hit game, adding a single in the seventh and an RBI single in the eighth to round out his six-RBI performance.

“I’ve been working all season to stay consistent,” Stowers said postgame. “It feels special, especially doing it against the team that drafted me.”

Miami starter Eury Pérez (3-2) delivered a stellar outing, tossing seven shutout innings with six strikeouts and allowing just three hits. Young, meanwhile, lasted only 4 1/3 innings, giving up a career-high seven runs and surrendering more home runs (four) on the day than in his previous five starts combined (three).

Baltimore’s only bright spot came from Ramón Laureano, who homered late to avoid the shutout.

Stowers’ third homer in the fifth inning broke the game open at 7-0 and ended Young’s afternoon, capping a stretch where Stowers accounted for five of Miami’s first seven runs.

Stowers became the first player to hit three home runs against Baltimore since Toronto’s Bo Bichette did so in the second game of a doubleheader on Sept. 5, 2022.

After a 1 hour, 38-minute rain delay at the start, Miami’s offense made sure the wait was worth it, sending the Marlins into the All-Star break on a high note.

Miami will host Kansas City after the break, while Baltimore heads to Tampa Bay on Friday, where RHP Charlie Morton (5-7, 5.18 ERA) will take the mound.
