Sucker Punch at Lauderdale Lakes Grocery Store Leaves Man in Coma

Lauderdale Lakes Grocery Store Sucker Punch Leaves Man in Coma; Suspect Arrested

A Routine Shopping Trip Turns Violent

LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. — What began as an ordinary evening at a Broward County grocery store erupted into shocking violence when a shopper was brutally sucker-punched and left in a coma. The attack, captured on surveillance video, has rattled the Lauderdale Lakes community and reignited debate about random assaults in public spaces.

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), the assault occurred around 7:20 p.m. on October 11, 2025, at the ALDI supermarket located at 3301 North State Road 7. Deputies say a verbal argument inside the store escalated after two men exchanged words. The confrontation spilled outside, where one man allegedly delivered a sudden, unprovoked punch that knocked the victim to the ground.

Caught on Camera

Security footage reviewed by detectives shows the suspect approaching the victim as he exited the store with a service dog. Without warning, the suspect allegedly struck him in the head, causing him to fall backward and hit his skull on the pavement. Witnesses described the impact as “sickening.” The victim, whose name has not been released, was rushed to Broward Health Medical Center, where doctors confirmed he suffered severe head trauma and remains in a medically induced coma.

“This was a senseless act of violence that changed a man’s life in seconds,” said BSO spokesperson Carey Codd. “Our detectives worked tirelessly to track down the individual responsible.”

The Arrest

On October 22, BSO deputies arrested 45-year-old Dandrea Tioni Johnson of Fort Lauderdale in connection with the attack. Johnson faces charges of felony battery causing great bodily harm, permanent disability, or disfigurement serious offenses under Florida law. A judge set Johnson’s bond at $100,000 during his first court appearance. When questioned by authorities, Johnson reportedly claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that the victim’s service dog, a pit bull, attacked him first. Investigators, however, said no evidence supports that claim, and witnesses did not report any aggressive behavior from the animal.

Community Outrage

Residents of Lauderdale Lakes have expressed anger and disbelief over the attack, which happened in broad daylight at a busy shopping center.

“It could’ve been any of us,” said local shopper Maria Estevez. “You don’t expect to be knocked unconscious for buying groceries.”

Community leaders have called for increased security presence in commercial areas following a string of violent confrontations in South Florida public spaces.

Ongoing Investigation

BSO detectives are still investigating the altercation’s origin and reviewing additional video evidence from inside the store. Prosecutors are expected to decide whether to pursue upgraded charges depending on the victim’s medical outcome. Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact BSO Violent Crimes Unit at (954) 321-4210 or Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
