Switzerland’s Second-Half Surge Sinks Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1, Takes Control of Group B

Switzerland finally found its breakthrough in the second half and erupted for four late goals to defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 on Thursday night at SoFi Stadium, moving into a commanding position in Group B of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A crowd of 70,026 created a vibrant atmosphere in Los Angeles, with thousands of passionate Bosnia-Herzegovina supporters turning the match into a home-away-from-home experience for the Dragons. For much of the evening, their team rewarded that support by frustrating a Swiss side desperate for three points after a disappointing opening 1-1 draw with Qatar.

Despite controlling possession and creating the majority of the chances, Switzerland struggled to find a way past a determined Bosnian defense for more than 70 minutes. The breakthrough finally arrived through an inspired substitution.

Just three minutes after entering the match for standout winger Dan Ndoye, 20-year-old Johan Manzambi produced a moment of brilliance in the 74th minute. The Geneva native, who plays for German club Freiburg, connected perfectly with an attempted clearing header from Amar Memic, unleashing a stunning volley into the net for his first-ever World Cup goal.

The strike ignited celebrations among the Swiss supporters and shifted the momentum decisively in Switzerland’s favor.

Bosnia-Herzegovina’s hopes of mounting a response suffered a major blow in the 82nd minute when defender Tarik Muharemovic received a red card for a dangerous tackle, reducing the Dragons to 10 men.

Switzerland quickly took advantage of the numerical superiority. Rubén Vargas doubled the lead in the 84th minute, putting the Swiss firmly in control and ending Bosnia’s resistance.

Manzambi then completed a dream evening in the 90th minute, finishing a well-worked move after being set up by Vargas. The young forward’s second goal capped a remarkable substitute appearance and effectively sealed the victory.

Bosnia-Herzegovina managed a consolation goal through Ermin Mahmic in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time, briefly giving their supporters something to celebrate. However, Switzerland had the final word.

Deep into stoppage time, captain Granit Xhaka calmly converted a penalty with the last kick of the match, completing the 4-1 scoreline and putting an emphatic finish on Switzerland’s strongest performance of the tournament so far.

While the final margin appeared lopsided, Bosnia-Herzegovina remained competitive for much of the contest. The Dragons, appearing in only their second FIFA World Cup and entering the match unbeaten in their previous nine competitive games, defended resolutely and stayed level deep into the second half before Switzerland’s late onslaught changed everything.

The victory places Switzerland in control of Group B and significantly boosts its chances of advancing to the knockout stage. Meanwhile, Bosnia-Herzegovina still remains firmly in contention for a place in the last 32, with crucial group-stage matches still to come.

For Switzerland, the night belonged to Manzambi. The young substitute announced himself on the World Cup stage with two goals in 16 minutes, transforming a tense contest into a statement victory and giving the Swiss a new hero as their World Cup campaign gathers momentum.
