Bomb Threat Spirit Airlines Flight
A 16-year-old boy is facing serious criminal charges after allegedly making a bomb threat that forced the evacuation of a Spirit Airlines flight at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Wednesday afternoon. The incident caused widespread disruption, prompted a full-scale law enforcement response, and left passengers shaken and confused as authorities worked to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
Panic Unfolds Before Takeoff
The Spirit Airlines flight, which was preparing for departure to Orlando, was already boarding passengers at the gate when the teen allegedly made the threat. According to initial reports from the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO), the teenager, who has not been named because of his age, made a verbal statement indicating there was a bomb on board the aircraft.
Passengers on the flight say they heard raised voices before a flight attendant quickly ushered people off the plane. Within minutes, the aircraft was surrounded by law enforcement, including airport security, BSO deputies, and members of the Broward County Bomb Squad.
“We were just getting settled when everything stopped,” said one passenger, Cynthia Ramos, who was traveling with her two children. “Next thing I knew, the flight attendants were telling us to grab our stuff and get off the plane. No one knew what was going on.”
Full Bomb Sweep Conducted
The aircraft was moved to a remote area of the tarmac, and a bomb-sniffing dog unit was brought in to inspect the plane, luggage, and cargo. All passengers were evacuated and relocated to a secure area of the terminal while authorities launched an investigation. Flights in and out of Terminal 4 were temporarily halted, leading to delays across the airport.
After a thorough sweep, no explosives or suspicious devices were found. Officials later confirmed that the threat was unfounded.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we followed all safety protocols, and the plane was cleared once we confirmed there was no threat,” said BSO spokesperson Carey Codd in a press briefing. “Fortunately, no one was hurt, but this kind of threat creates a ripple effect across the airport and the community.”
Arrest and Charges
The 16-year-old suspect was arrested on-site and charged with making a false report concerning planting a bomb, explosive, or weapon of mass destruction—a second-degree felony under Florida law. If convicted, the teen could face significant penalties, including time in a juvenile detention facility and, potentially, transfer to adult court depending on prosecutorial discretion.
He is currently being held at the Broward County Juvenile Detention Center, and his case will be reviewed by the State Attorney’s Office in the coming days.
Law enforcement has not released any information regarding the teen’s motive, and it remains unclear whether the threat was made as a joke, a dare, or with more serious intent. Authorities are interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage and audio recordings from the flight to piece together a timeline of events.
Disruption and Reactions
The incident caused widespread disruption for hundreds of travelers at one of Florida’s busiest airports, especially given the summer travel season. Multiple flights were delayed, and TSA checkpoints in the terminal experienced extended wait times due to the security response.
Spirit Airlines issued a brief statement shortly after the situation was resolved:
“Spirit Airlines is aware of a security incident that occurred on one of our flights prior to departure at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. We take all threats seriously and are cooperating fully with local authorities. The safety of our guests and team members is our highest priority.”
Passengers expressed a mixture of relief and frustration after the ordeal. “It’s scary to think someone could say something like that and bring everything to a standstill,” said Marcus Bennett, another passenger on the flight. “I get that he’s a kid, but these kinds of things are not pranks. This affects real people.”
Authorities Urge Public to Take Threats Seriously
The Broward Sheriff’s Office used the incident to remind the public that making false threats—especially at airports—has serious consequences, regardless of age.
“These kinds of hoaxes waste valuable resources, cause unnecessary fear, and disrupt the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of people,” said BSO Captain Angel Rodriguez. “There is nothing funny about making a bomb threat. It’s not a joke. It’s a felony.”
Airport operations resumed normal activity later in the evening, and the affected Spirit Airlines flight eventually departed with a new crew following additional safety inspections.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges or the involvement of others. Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to contact the Broward County Crime Stoppers tip line.
