Florida Atlantic’s late-game surge nearly forced overtime, but a missed 36-yard field goal as time expired sealed a dramatic 48–45 victory for UConn on Saturday, giving the Huskies their second straight nine-win season under head coach Jim Mora.
In a matchup packed with explosive offense, wild momentum swings and five lead changes, UConn running back Cam Edwards delivered the knockout punch. Edwards, who finished with 101 rushing yards, scored two second-half touchdowns from a yard out — including the game-winner with 26 seconds remaining. His final score capped a pressure-packed 75-yard drive and put the Huskies (9–3) back in front after surrendering the lead twice in the fourth quarter.
But Florida Atlantic wasn’t done. With no timeouts and less than 20 seconds left, quarterback Caden Veltkamp engineered a stunning rapid-fire push into field-goal range. He connected with Jayshon Platt for 27 yards, then hit Easton Messer for 29 yards just 15 seconds later, setting up a 36-yard attempt to tie it. But Garrison Smith’s kick drifted wide left, allowing UConn to escape Boca Raton with a heart-stopping victory.
Before the late-game chaos, UConn looked like it might run away with the contest. Quarterback Joe Fagnano was electric early, throwing three touchdown passes on three consecutive drives to put the Huskies up 24–3 in the first quarter.
Fagnano finished the day 33-of-46 for 446 yards, continuing an elite season that saw him enter the week ranked fourth nationally in passing yards. He closes the regular season with 3,448 yards, spearheading UConn’s most prolific stretch of offensive football in program history.
Though FAU fell short, quarterback Caden Veltkamp turned in a performance that will go down in Owls history. The sophomore threw for a program-record 494 yards, completing 42 of 55 passes, tossing two touchdowns, and adding an 11-yard go-ahead rushing score with 2:11 remaining.
That touchdown came on the heels of a 33-yard strike to Easton Messer, part of FAU’s furious second-half comeback.
Veltkamp also connected on a 90-yard touchdown, one of the longest plays in school history, as he continued his rise among the nation’s top passers. He entered the game sixth in the country in passing yards and now stands at 3,458 yards with one game left on FAU’s schedule.
Easton Messer, who began the day with the second-most receptions in the nation, continued to build on a stellar season. He hauled in 11 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown, raising his national-leading total to 94 catches.
Jayshon Platt added a crucial late grab to help give FAU its final shot at overtime.
UConn’s victory not only showcased its high-octane offense but also marked a historic benchmark for the program: consecutive nine-win seasons for the first time ever, both under Jim Mora. The Huskies also strengthened their postseason résumé with one of their gutsiest road wins of the year.
What appeared early to be a UConn blowout turned into one of the most dramatic finishes of Week 13 — and one FAU will replay for a long time after coming inches from overtime.
For UConn, though, the kick that went wide left will be remembered as the moment that turned a wild, back-and-forth shootout into a season-defining win.
