Volkanovski Reigns at Home, Defeats Lopes by Unanimous Decision to Retain Featherweight Title at UFC 325

The UFC finally brought its featherweight crown Down Under, and Alexander Volkanovski made sure it stayed there.

UFC 325 lit up Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on Saturday night, delivering nonstop action before reaching its peak in a highly anticipated featherweight title rematch between champion Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski and No. 2 contender Diego Lopes. Competing on home soil for the first time in his storied UFC career, the Australian legend rose to the occasion, defeating Lopes by unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 50-45) to successfully defend his title.

From the opening horn, the main event echoed the themes of their first meeting. Volkanovski relied on pristine footwork, sharp timing, and elite fundamentals to control the range and disrupt Lopes’ forward pressure. Time and again, the champion intercepted Lopes with clean, heavy shots, refusing to be drawn into reckless exchanges while steadily piling up points.

Lopes, to his credit, showed the same grit and danger that earned him the rematch. He produced several tense moments for the partisan Sydney crowd, most notably in the third round when he dropped Volkanovski with a short right hook. Late in the fight, Lopes also threatened with an armbar, briefly raising hopes of a dramatic finish. But as in their first encounter at UFC 314, he was unable to consistently close the distance or maintain control long enough to dethrone the champion.

As the fight wore on, Volkanovski’s composure and fight IQ became the difference. He adjusted seamlessly, mixed in level changes, exited exchanges at the right moments, and neutralized Lopes’ most dangerous weapons. When the final horn sounded, there was little doubt about the result, and all three judges scored the bout in favor of the champion.

With the victory, Volkanovski earned his second straight unanimous decision win over Lopes and tied Jose Aldo with his eighth UFC featherweight title fight victory—another milestone in an already legendary résumé. The performance was a masterclass in preparation, strategy, and tactical execution, underscoring why Volkanovski remains the gold standard at 145 pounds.

UFC 325 as a whole delivered a raucous night of entertainment and pivotal results, but the lasting image will be Volkanovski standing tall in front of his home fans, belt raised high. If “Alexander the Great” chooses to continue his remarkable run, the featherweight division still offers several intriguing challengers—and after another dominant display in Sydney, few would bet against him adding even more chapters to his legacy.
