Watch: Miami Police Exchange Gunfire in Chaotic Apartment Shootout

Watch: Miami Police Engage in Violent Apartment Shootout with Armed Suspect Javier Albriza Jara

Miami, Florida — Newly released body-camera and cellphone video shows the moment a domestic disturbance spiraled into a violent shootout between Miami-Dade deputies and a 50-year-old gunman inside a West Miami-Dade apartment building. The incident, which unfolded on August 26, 2025, left one woman hospitalized and the suspect dead.

The Chaos Unfolds

Just before 4 p.m., Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Dispatch received a 911 call reporting shots fired and a woman bleeding near 305 NW 72nd Avenue. Callers identified the shooter as Javier Albriza Jara, who witnesses said was chasing and trying to kill a woman in the complex.

A neighbor’s cellphone footage, now released publicly, shows Jara behaving erratically, diving headfirst through an apartment window while armed with a handgun. Moments later, he returned to the unit, confronted another resident, and ran upstairs to his own fourth-floor apartment with the door left wide open.

Inside, Jara shot a 46-year-old woman in the chest and fired multiple rounds through the hallway. Deputies arriving on scene found the wounded woman as witnesses directed them upstairs toward Jara’s unit.

Deputies Confront the Gunman

As seen on newly released body-worn camera footage, three deputies approached the open door and repeatedly ordered Jara to show his hands. The suspect ignored the commands, grabbing a pistol from a table and attempting to reload it.

“Show me your hands! Drop the gun!” one deputy shouted before gunfire erupted.

An intense exchange followed, with multiple rounds fired both into and out of the apartment. Deputies took cover and established a perimeter as the Miami-Dade Special Response Team (SRT) mobilized. When the SRT finally entered, officers found Jara dead on the floor from gunshot wounds.

The Victim Survives

Despite being shot in the chest, the 46-year-old woman managed to flee to a neighbor’s apartment on the third floor, where deputies rendered aid and carried her down to paramedics. She was transported to a local hospital and later listed in stable condition. Her father later told investigators that Jara had also aimed a gun at him and pulled the trigger but the weapon misfired. No deputies were injured.

A Violent End to a Disturbing Pattern

Investigators say Jara’s actions appeared deliberate and premeditated. Neighbors reported hearing shouting and multiple gunshots before deputies arrived. The entire confrontation, from the first 911 call to Jara’s death, lasted roughly 20 minutes.

Miami-Dade Police’s Homicide Bureau and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are reviewing the shooting, as is standard procedure when officers discharge their weapons. Officials confirmed that Jara had no active warrants but was known to law enforcement for prior domestic disturbances and mental-health evaluations.

“This was an extremely volatile and dangerous situation,” a department spokesperson said in a post-incident briefing. “Deputies acted quickly to prevent further loss of life.”

The Video Release

The footage released this week by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office shows both the body-cam view from the lead deputy and civilian cellphone footage from the courtyard below. The video captures the chaos, the shouted commands, and the deafening burst of gunfire that ended the standoff. The department released the video citing “public transparency” following multiple media inquiries and Freedom of Information Act requests. The footage has since gone viral across South Florida social media feeds.

Aftermath and Review

The 46-year-old victim continues to recover. The deputies involved are on standard administrative leave pending review by the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office. No charges are expected against the deputies. The father of the victim said his daughter “was lucky to be alive,” and thanked officers for saving her.

The newly released footage gives the public an unfiltered look at what officers faced that day a deranged, armed man firing inside a residential building, a wounded woman fighting to survive, and seconds separating life from death.
