Armed Man Arrested at Wilton Manors Pride Parade After Ignoring Security
Wilton Manors – A potentially dangerous situation was prevented on Saturday at the Stonewall Pride Parade when a man was arrested carrying a loaded handgun and additional ammunition. Police identified the suspect as 31-year-old Michael Monheit.
According to the Wilton Manors Police Department, Monheit attempted to enter a secured area of the parade through a checkpoint outfitted with metal detectors. When he passed through, the alarm sounded, but Monheit continued walking, ignoring repeated commands from security guards to stop.
Event security immediately contacted law enforcement officers stationed at the parade, who also ordered Monheit to halt. He again refused, prompting officers to physically detain him. A search revealed a Glock 43 9mm pistol clipped to the right side of his waistband and two loaded 9mm magazines in his pocket.
Monheit was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and trespassing while armed. He was transported to jail and appeared in court on Sunday, where a judge set his bond at $2,000 and ordered him to surrender any other firearms in his possession.
The incident took place at one of Florida’s most high-profile LGBTQ+ events. The Stonewall Pride Parade, held annually in Wilton Manors, celebrates LGBTQ+ history and community resilience, drawing thousands of attendees. Despite the arrest, there were no injuries and the event continued without further disruption.
Law enforcement officials commended the security team and responding officers for their swift actions in diffusing what could have escalated into a more dangerous situation. As of now, no specific motive has been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Officials are asking anyone with information about the incident or Monheit’s intent to contact the Wilton Manors Police Department or submit a tip through Broward County Crime Stoppers.
