With Uncertainty Over Tariffs, Should You Do Your Holiday Shopping Now?

Holiday Shopping and Tariffs

The holiday season is 7 months away, consumers are facing more than just the usual gift lists and decorating dilemmas — they’re also grappling with the growing uncertainty surrounding tariffs and the ongoing U.S.-China trade war. With President Donald Trump’s tariff policies still in flux, financial experts and retail analysts alike are urging shoppers to think twice before waiting for the usual Black Friday or last-minute December deals.

Tariffs Could Mean Higher Prices

The trade war between the U.S. and China has already resulted in tariffs on billions of dollars’ worth of goods. And although some tariff increases have been delayed or suspended pending negotiations, many remain in effect — or are poised to kick in with little notice.

Among the products affected: electronics, toys, apparel, and even holiday decorations. These are the very items topping most holiday shopping lists.

“Retailers are doing their best to absorb some of the costs, but eventually, those increases are passed on to consumers,” said Sarah Davis, a retail analyst with Bright Markets. “What you’re buying in December could be noticeably more expensive than it is right now.”

A Supply Chain Squeeze

Adding to the pressure is a disruption in the global supply chain. Many companies rushed to bring in inventory ahead of potential tariffs, creating bottlenecks at ports and warehouses. If tariffs rise or if delays hit shipments, stores could see shortages of some popular items.

“For high-demand toys and gadgets, don’t count on restocks if they sell out early,” Davis warned. “We’re advising clients to act sooner rather than later.”

The Case for Early Shopping

Financial planners are increasingly recommending that consumers adjust their holiday shopping timelines. While waiting until Black Friday or Cyber Monday may still yield some deals, there’s no guarantee that prices will remain low or that popular items will still be available.

Here are some reasons to consider starting your shopping now:

  • Avoid Higher Prices: Lock in today’s prices before potential tariffs raise costs further.

  • Better Selection: Shop while shelves are full and shipping times are still predictable.

  • Budget Control: Spreading out purchases over time can help avoid a massive credit card bill in January.

The Risks of Waiting

While it’s possible that trade negotiations could lead to lowered or suspended tariffs — which might, in theory, bring prices back down — many experts see that as a long shot.

“The market doesn’t like uncertainty, and neither should consumers,” said James Lin, a trade economist at Midtown Policy Group. “There’s no way to predict how this will play out, so planning based on hope is risky.”

Bottom Line: Shop Smart and Early

If you’re looking to stretch your holiday budget this year, starting your shopping now may be the smartest move. While it’s always wise to compare prices and be on the lookout for promotions, the potential for tariff-driven price hikes and product shortages makes procrastination a pricier gamble than usual.

Whether you’re eyeing the latest smartphone, shopping for a new set of LED string lights, or hunting down that must-have toy of the season, buying sooner rather than later might just be the best gift you give yourself this year.
