Walmart Knife Attack
“This was a violent and random act, inflicted not only on individuals but designed to traumatize an entire community,” said Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg, as officials prepare to charge a man with terrorism following a mass stabbing inside a Walmart store in Traverse City, Michigan. On Saturday, July 26, at approximately 4:10 p.m., 42-year-old Bradford James Gille of Afton, Michigan, entered the Walmart in Traverse City—about 90 miles north of his hometown. After lingering inside the store for more than 30 minutes, Gille launched a sudden knife attack near the checkout area. Armed with a folding knife with a 3.5-inch blade, he randomly stabbed unsuspecting customers, slashing victims across the throat, back, and face.
Police say a total of 11 people were injured in the attack, including one Walmart employee. The victims range in age from 29 to 84 and include both men and women. Initially, six were listed in critical condition and five in serious condition. By Sunday, however, hospital officials reported four patients in serious condition, seven in fair condition, and one already released. All are expected to survive. Walmart staff and customers acted quickly to intervene. Among them was Derrick Perry, a U.S. Marine veteran who happened to be shopping at the time. Perry, armed with a legally carried handgun, confronted the attacker with the help of bystanders using shopping carts to subdue Gille. Their efforts effectively ended the rampage just minutes before deputies arrived at the scene. Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea praised the quick response, saying, “What these civilians did was nothing short of remarkable.”
Police received the emergency call at 4:43 p.m., and a deputy arrived within three minutes. By then, Gille had already been restrained by customers. Authorities recovered the knife and took Gille into custody without further incident. Prosecutors announced plans to charge Gille with one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. According to Prosecutor Moeggenberg, the terrorism charge is based on the broader impact of the attack—not just the physical harm caused, but the intent to instill fear and disrupt public peace. “He didn’t just hurt people,” Moeggenberg stated. “He shattered the community’s sense of safety.”
At this point, the motive remains unclear. Authorities have ruled out any known connection between Gille and the victims. Investigators are combing through the suspect’s background, which includes previous arrests for assault, drug offenses, and vandalism. The FBI is assisting local law enforcement in determining whether there was any ideological or extremist influence behind the stabbing spree. Witnesses described a chaotic and terrifying scene. Tiffany DeFell, who was inside the store, said, “It was really scary… This is something you see out of the movies.” Another witness, Steven Carter, recounted seeing victims flee through emergency exits and hearing screams as the attack unfolded. “At first, it was disbelief,” Carter said. “Then it was fear, shock. And it all happened fast.”
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement expressing sympathy for the victims and gratitude to first responders. Walmart confirmed that the store has been closed temporarily and that employees and customers affected by the incident are being offered counseling services. As of Sunday, the suspect remained in jail awaiting arraignment, which is expected early this week. If convicted on the terrorism charge alone, Gille could face life in prison.
The mass stabbing has rattled the Traverse City community, a quiet tourist destination known for cherry festivals and Lake Michigan shorelines. In response, the city has opened a crisis response center at Northwestern Michigan College’s Innovation Center, offering mental health support to victims, witnesses, and community members. While rare, knife attacks of this scale in the U.S. are not unprecedented. Law enforcement officials noted that what distinguishes this case is its seemingly random nature and potential ideological undertones—factors that elevated the charges to include terrorism. The investigation is ongoing, but the message from officials is clear: this was not just an assault on individuals, but a calculated effort to instill terror in the public.
