The U.S. team showcased their prowess by winning 21-14, 21-11 in their opening match.

The match, set against the picturesque Parisian backdrop, saw Budinger and Evans take control early. They jumped to a 10-4 lead in the first set, demonstrating their superior chemistry and athleticism. The second set initially appeared more competitive, with the French team staying within two points. However, Budinger and Evans soon found their rhythm, embarking on a 4-0 run to lead 12-6. The momentum stayed with the Americans as Budinger’s defensive prowess came to the fore, highlighted by several crucial blocks. His fourth block of the set sealed the 21-11 win, ensuring a clean sweep for the U.S. duo.

Chase Budinger, 36, made history with this match, becoming the first athlete to compete in both an NBA regular season game and an Olympic beach volleyball game. Budinger, a former NBA player with over 400 games and seven seasons under his belt, transitioned back to volleyball after his basketball career. His athletic journey began with a stellar high school volleyball career in California, where he was named National Volleyball Player of the Year. Although he initially chose basketball, playing for the University of Arizona, his return to volleyball has been marked by impressive success.

Budinger and Evans will face the Dutch duo of Stefan Boermans and Yorick De Groot on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. ET, hoping to continue their winning streak and further their quest for Olympic glory.
