In a commanding display of basketball prowess, Team USA extended its remarkable Olympic winning streak to 60 games, defeating Australia 85-64 in the semifinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics Women’s Basketball Tournament. The victory not only solidifies the U.S. women’s team’s dominance in the sport but also propels them into their eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal game.

The U.S. women’s basketball team has been the gold standard in international competition for decades, and their performance in Paris has been nothing short of extraordinary. With one more win, they will secure an unprecedented eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal, further cementing their legacy as one of the most dominant teams in sports history.

Facing an old rival in Australia, the U.S. team left no doubt about their intentions from the very beginning. Led by Breanna Stewart, who contributed 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists, the Americans overwhelmed the Aussies with a smothering defensive effort and relentless offensive pressure. A’ja Wilson added 10 points and eight rebounds, while Jackie Young continued her stellar tournament play with 14 points and five assists.

Australia, which entered the game leading the tournament in 3-point shooting, was stifled by the U.S. defense, managing just 36% shooting from the field and a dismal 7-of-29 from beyond the arc. The American defense, characterized by aggressive hedging, quick recoveries, and tenacious closeouts, set the tone early. Australia struggled to find any rhythm, committing more turnovers (3) than field goals (2) in the first four minutes of play.

The turning point of the game came in the second quarter when Team USA launched a 14-2 run, effectively putting the game out of reach. During this stretch, the Americans held the Opals to just one field goal over the first five minutes, showcasing their defensive intensity and ability to capitalize on Australia’s mistakes.

While the U.S. had faced some challenges in their earlier tournament games, the semifinal was a clear statement that they had found another gear. The team’s energy, particularly on the defensive end, was palpable from the opening tip, leading to fast-break opportunities and easy points that quickly put the Aussies on the back foot.

With the victory, the U.S. women now await the winner of the France-Belgium semifinal for a chance to make history in the gold medal game on Sunday. While the opponent is yet to be determined, it’s hard to ignore the feeling that every other team is playing for silver at this point.

The U.S. men’s team had to survive a scare against Serbia in their semifinal, but the women were in no mood for such drama. Their focused and dominant performance against Australia serves as a reminder of their unparalleled excellence on the Olympic stage. As they prepare for the final, one thing is clear: this U.S. women’s basketball team is on a mission to add yet another golden chapter to their storied legacy.
