2026 Kentucky Derby Sets Viewership Record as Golden Tempo Delivers Historic Last-to-First Triumph

The 152nd running of the Kentucky Derby delivered a record-setting moment on and off the track, as NBC Sports’ broadcast of the 2026 “Run for the Roses” became the most-watched Kentucky Derby in history. The telecast averaged 19.6 million viewers across NBC and Peacock, surpassing last year’s mark of 17.7 million by 11%, according to preliminary Nielsen data and Adobe Analytics streaming figures.

That figure also eclipses the long-standing high of 18.5 million viewers from 1989, when Sunday Silence captured the Derby, marking a new benchmark for the most iconic race in American horse racing. The surge reflects both growing national interest and a dramatic race that delivered one of the most memorable finishes in modern Derby history.

Beyond television ratings, Churchill Downs Inc. reported a historic wagering total for Kentucky Derby Week, with all-sources handle reaching $487 million, a 3% increase over the previous record.

  • Derby Day program handle: $340 million
  • Kentucky Derby race handle: $225 million

While both individual-day and race-specific wagering totals fell slightly short of last year’s records, the overall week-long figure established a new high-water mark for the sport.

On the track at Churchill Downs, the 2026 Derby delivered a dramatic storyline worthy of the record audience. Golden Tempo produced a breathtaking last-to-first rally, passing all 17 rivals in the stretch to win the Kentucky Derby under jockey Jose Ortiz.

Trained by Cherie DeVaux, Golden Tempo’s victory marked a historic breakthrough, as she became the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby.

Golden Tempo completed the 1¼-mile race in 2:02.27 over a fast track, a time that ranks fifth-fastest among Derby renewals since the points qualification era began in 2013.

The pace was honest from the start, with Six Speed controlling early fractions of:

  • 22.68 seconds (opening quarter)
  • 46.44 seconds (half-mile)
  • 1:10.90 (three-quarters)

As the field turned for home, Japan-based contender Danon Bourbon briefly surged to the front after a mile in 1:36.45, appearing poised to steal the race. But late closers arrived in waves. Golden Tempo ultimately surged past the field in deep stretch, holding off Renegade.

Golden Tempo is by Curlin out of the Bernardini mare Carrumba, a multiple Grade 3-winning runner campaigned by the Phipps family. The colt traces to a carefully planned mating credited in part to former Thoroughbred Times bloodstock editor John Sparkman, according to co-breeder Vinny Viola of St. Elias Stable.

The horse was bred in 2023 at Claiborne Farm before beginning his training path that eventually led to DeVaux’s barn at Ellis Park in 2025.

Key connections in the ownership group include breeders Phipps family and St. Elias Stables, marking a long-term developmental success story from breeding shed to Churchill Downs winner’s circle.

For Cherie DeVaux, the victory carried added emotional weight. Her journey to Derby success was shaped by mentorship under the late trainer Chuck Simon, and her win represents a generational culmination of work beneath the Twin Spires.

DeVaux said she would not consider plans for the Preakness Stakes (May 16 at Laurel Park) until at least Sunday morning, emphasizing recovery and reflection after a career-defining victory.

Notably, last year’s Derby winner Sovereignty skipped the Preakness, continuing a recent trend of selective Triple Crown participation.

Between record-breaking television audiences, historic wagering totals, and a dramatic come-from-behind winner, the 2026 Kentucky Derby delivered one of the most significant days in modern racing history.

Golden Tempo’s surge, Cherie DeVaux’s breakthrough win, and a national audience nearing 20 million viewers combined to cement the 152nd Kentucky Derby as a defining moment for the sport—both on the track and far beyond Churchill Downs.
