Retired Air Force General With Ties to Advanced Weapons Programs Reported Missing in New Mexico
A retired U.S. Air Force major general who previously oversaw advanced military research programs has been reported missing in New Mexico, prompting a multi-agency search and raising concerns among defense observers about the disappearance of a senior former official with deep knowledge of classified projects.
Authorities say William Neil McCasland, 68, was last seen in late February after leaving his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on foot. According to local law enforcement, McCasland left behind his cellphone and has not been heard from since. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office issued a Silver Alert seeking assistance from the public in locating the retired officer, noting that investigators have concerns for his safety due to reported medical issues.
Federal authorities have since joined the investigation, with the FBI assisting local law enforcement in the ongoing search.
“This is a man with some of the most sensitive secrets of the United States in his head,” investigative journalist Ross Coulthart said while discussing the disappearance on his “Reality Check” podcast.
Former Air Force Leader in Advanced Research Programs
McCasland served more than three decades in the U.S. Air Force and retired with the rank of major general. During his career he held senior roles overseeing advanced military research and development programs, including work connected to space and weapons technology. He previously served as commander of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, one of the military’s primary centers for advanced aerospace research.
The laboratory conducts research on technologies ranging from propulsion systems and space capabilities to advanced materials and directed-energy weapons. Because of the classified nature of many of those programs, senior officials who served in such roles often retain extensive knowledge of sensitive military technologies.
Search Underway in Albuquerque
Authorities say McCasland was last seen February 27 or 28, when he reportedly left his home in Albuquerque on foot. Investigators say he did not take his phone with him, and there has been no confirmed contact since his disappearance. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office said officers are continuing to search for the retired general and are asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to contact authorities. Silver Alerts are typically issued when a missing adult is believed to be at risk due to age, medical concerns, or cognitive conditions.
Speculation Circulates Online
McCasland’s disappearance has drawn attention in defense and UFO research circles due to his past leadership role at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, which has long been associated with advanced aerospace programs. Some commentators have speculated that his background in classified research may be significant, though authorities have not indicated any evidence linking his disappearance to national security issues.
Ross Coulthart, an investigative journalist who has reported extensively on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), described the disappearance as potentially significant given McCasland’s career and expertise. However, officials have emphasized that the investigation remains focused on locating the missing retiree and ensuring his safety.
Investigation Continues
As of now, law enforcement agencies have released few details about the circumstances surrounding McCasland’s disappearance. Authorities say the case remains an active missing-person investigation, and they are continuing to follow leads. Anyone with information about the whereabouts of William Neil McCasland is urged to contact the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office.
