Aaron Rodgers Leads Steelers Overtime Rally Past Buccaneers for First Road Win

Pittsburgh Overcomes 13 Point Deficit to Beat Tampa Bay 26-19 in Overtime

The Pittsburgh Steelers took a significant step forward in Week 6, overcoming a 13 point, fourth quarter deficit to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26-19 in overtime Sunday. Aaron Rodgers threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns, leading Pittsburgh to its first road victory of the season and tying Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning for third place on the NFL’s all-time touchdown passing list.

Rodgers finished 33 of 49 passing as the Steelers improved to 4-2, overcoming a sluggish start and a dominant early performance from Tampa Bay’s defense. His two touchdown passes brought his career total to 539, matching Manning. Only Tom Brady, with 649, and Drew Brees, with 571, have thrown more touchdown passes in NFL history.

Pittsburgh entered the game undefeated at home but winless in two road contests. After struggling to generate consistent offense for three quarters, the Steelers found their rhythm when the game was on the line, putting together four scoring drives in the fourth quarter before delivering the decisive blow in overtime.

Rodgers, Steelers Rally in the Fourth Quarter

The Buccaneers controlled much of the game early, taking a 13-3 halftime lead before extending their advantage to 16-3 entering the fourth quarter. Tampa Bay’s defense pressured Rodgers throughout the afternoon, recording five sacks and limiting Pittsburgh’s offensive opportunities.

Rodgers was sacked five times through the first three quarters and threw an interception in the opening period that helped set up one of Chase McLaughlin’s four field goals. The Steelers also played without injured wide receivers Michael Pittman Jr. and Roman Wilson, making it difficult to establish a consistent passing attack.

The breakthrough finally came early in the fourth quarter when Rodgers connected with Darnell Washington on a 5-yard touchdown pass, giving Pittsburgh a much-needed spark. The Steelers continued to capitalize on defensive takeaways and field-position opportunities to work their way back into the contest.

Chris Boswell contributed four field goals, including a 20-yarder that briefly put Pittsburgh ahead 19-16 with 1:21 remaining in regulation. That opportunity followed an interception by former Buccaneers cornerback Jamel Dean, whose 40-yard return brought the Steelers to Tampa Bay’s 2-yard line.

However, the Buccaneers refused to go away. Rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels responded by completing passes of 22 and 13 yards to fellow rookie Ted Hurst, moving Tampa Bay into field-goal range. McLaughlin, who remained perfect on the season at 14-for-14, drilled a 53-yard field goal to tie the game at 19-19 and force overtime.

Steelers Finish the Comeback in Overtime

Pittsburgh won the game with a methodical overtime drive that showcased Rodgers’ experience and composure. The Steelers marched 70 yards on 12 plays before Rodgers found Germie Bernard for a 7-yard touchdown with 3:15 remaining in the extra period, giving Pittsburgh a 26-19 lead.

The touchdown completed a remarkable comeback for a Steelers offense that had struggled to find the end zone for most of the afternoon. Rodgers’ ability to deliver in critical moments proved decisive as Pittsburgh secured its first road win of the campaign.

Tampa Bay still had an opportunity to respond, with Daniels guiding the Buccaneers toward midfield on their ensuing possession. But the Steelers’ defense delivered the final play when Jalen Ramsey sacked Daniels on fourth down, dropping the rookie for an 11-yard loss and ending the game.

The victory was especially significant for Pittsburgh because of how far the team had to climb after trailing by 13 points in the fourth quarter. The Steelers demonstrated resilience on both sides of the ball, turning defensive takeaways into scoring opportunities and eventually converting their late momentum into an overtime victory.

DK Metcalf Leads Pittsburgh’s Receiving Attack

Wide receiver DK Metcalf played a major role in the Steelers’ comeback, finishing with 11 receptions for 93 yards on 15 targets. His increased involvement came one week after he received a season low four targets during Pittsburgh’s home victory over Indianapolis.

Metcalf gave Rodgers a reliable option as the Steelers worked to overcome Tampa Bay’s early defensive pressure. His production helped Pittsburgh sustain drives and generate the offensive momentum needed to erase the deficit.

Rodgers entered the game after throwing three touchdown passes in each of his previous three contests. Although that streak ended, he found a way to deliver when Pittsburgh needed him most, completing two touchdown passes and guiding the winning overtime drive.

The Steelers’ offensive line and passing game faced a difficult challenge against a Buccaneers defense that had improved over its previous two games following an 0-4 start. Despite the pressure and early mistakes, Pittsburgh made enough adjustments in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Buccaneers Continue to Struggle in Close Games

Tampa Bay fell to 1-5 despite leading for most of the afternoon and putting itself in position to earn a much needed victory. The Buccaneers have now lost all five of their defeats by seven points or fewer, highlighting their difficulty closing out competitive games.

Daniels, making his third career start while filling in for the injured Baker Mayfield, completed 22 of 43 passes for 164 yards and one touchdown. Although he helped Tampa Bay build its early advantage, two fourth quarter interceptions gave Pittsburgh opportunities to get back into the game.

Daylen Everette recorded one of the interceptions, helping set up a field goal that cut into Tampa Bay’s lead. Dean’s interception and subsequent 40-yard return to the Buccaneers’ 2-yard line created another scoring opportunity for Pittsburgh.

Tampa Bay received a strong defensive performance for much of the afternoon, recording five sacks and keeping Rodgers under pressure. The offense also got a second-quarter touchdown reception from Emeka Egbuka, who caught a 2-yard scoring pass as the Buccaneers established control.

Despite those contributions, Tampa Bay could not hold off Pittsburgh’s fourth-quarter surge or answer Rodgers’ overtime touchdown. McLaughlin’s perfect kicking performance kept the Buccaneers competitive, but the team ultimately suffered another narrow defeat.

Steelers Coach Mike McCarthy Returns After Ankle Injury

Pittsburgh coach Mike McCarthy also experienced a brief scare during the game after suffering a sore ankle along the Steelers’ sideline. McCarthy spent halftime in the injury tent while being evaluated after someone stepped on his ankle.

He was initially seen limping toward the visiting locker room before turning back and continuing to the injury tent behind Pittsburgh’s bench. McCarthy returned to the sideline for the start of the third quarter and remained with the team through the end of the game.

His return coincided with a second half turnaround that saw the Steelers overcome their offensive struggles and complete one of their most important victories of the season.

Pittsburgh Gains Momentum as Tampa Bay Searches for Answers

The Steelers’ 26-19 overtime victory improved their record to 4-2 and provided an important boost after beginning the season 0-2 on the road. Rodgers’ late game execution, Metcalf’s consistent production and Pittsburgh’s opportunistic defense proved decisive in a game that appeared to be slipping away.

For the Buccaneers, the defeat extended a frustrating stretch of close losses despite a defense that has shown improvement and a kicking game that continues to deliver. Tampa Bay’s inability to protect its fourth quarter lead once again proved costly.

Pittsburgh now has a road victory to build on as it continues its season, while Tampa Bay must find a way to turn competitive performances into wins before its early-season struggles become more difficult to overcome.
