Coral Gables

UM

The University of Miami

Is a private research university located in Coral Gables, Florida. It was founded in 1925 by a group of citizens who wanted to create a university in Miami. Initially, UM was a small school with just 646 students and 16 faculty members, but it quickly grew into a major university. One of its early successes was its law school, which was established in 1926 and quickly gained a reputation as one of the best law schools in the region. UM continued to expand in the following years, adding new schools and programs, such as the School of Business Administration, the School of Medicine, and the School of Engineering. In the 1980s and 1990s, UM experienced significant growth and development. During this time, it became a major research university and expanded its international programs. In 1984, UM opened a campus in the Dominican Republic, and in 1992, it established the Center for Hemispheric Policy. In 1995, the university received a $100 million gift from philanthropist Theodore Schwartz, which allowed it to expand its research programs and build new facilities. Men’s Basketball Team

Known as the Miami Hurricanes, is a highly competitive team that plays in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The program has a strong history, with multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and NBA players produced. The team is coached by Jim Larranaga, who took over in 2011 and has led the team to numerous successful seasons. The Miami Hurricanes have had many standout players over the years, including Rick Barry, who went on to have a successful NBA career and is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Other notable players include Shane Larkin, who was named the ACC Player of the Year in 2013, and Lonnie Walker IV, who was drafted in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft. Under Coach Larranaga, the Miami Hurricanes have continued to be a competitive team, with multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and notable wins over top-ranked opponents. The team has also produced NBA players like Bruce Brown and Chris Lykes. Jim Larranaga

Is the head coach of the University of Miami men’s basketball team, the Miami Hurricanes. He has been the head coach of the team since 2011 and has led them to multiple successful seasons. Larranaga has been coaching for over 30 years and has a reputation as a highly skilled coach who is respected throughout the basketball community. Larranaga began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Davidson College in 1971. He went on to be an assistant coach at Virginia, before taking over as the head coach at Bowling Green in 1986. He had a successful tenure at Bowling Green, leading the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances in six seasons. Larranaga then took over as the head coach at George Mason in 1997, where he had his most successful season in 2006 when he led the team to the Final Four. Since taking over as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes, Larranaga has led the team to 6 NCAA Tournament appearances, 2 regular season championships, 1 ACC tournament championship, 4 Sweet 16 appearrances, 2 Elite 8 appearances, and in 2023 1st ever Final 4 appearance in school history. He has won ACC Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2016. While becoming one of the most respected coaches in the ACC. He is known for his disciplined approach to coaching and his ability to get the most out of his players. Larranaga has also been active in the community and is known for his charitable work, including his involvement with the Coaches vs. Cancer program.

The Larranaga Lawn

Is a popular gathering place on the University of Miami campus, named after the men’s basketball coach Jim Larranaga. The lawn is located outside of the Student Activities Center and is a central hub for students to socialize and relax. The space is also used for a variety of campus events, including concerts, festivals, and other outdoor activities. The Larranaga Lawn was named in honor of Coach Larranaga in 2013, to recognize his contributions to the university and the men’s basketball program. Coach Larranaga has been a highly successful coach during his tenure at the University of Miami, leading the team to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances and developing several NBA players. The naming of the lawn was a way to honor his legacy and impact on the university. In addition to its use as a gathering place, the Larranaga Lawn is also a sustainable and environmentally friendly space. The lawn features a stormwater management system that captures and filters runoff water, which helps to reduce erosion and improve water quality. The space also features native landscaping, which promotes biodiversity and helps to conserve water. The Storm Surge

Is the official student section for the University of Miami men’s basketball team. The Storm Surge is made up of dedicated and passionate students who come together to support their team and create a home court advantage for the Miami Hurricanes. The name “Storm Surge” refers to the phenomenon of a rise in water level caused by a tropical cyclone. It’s an appropriate name for the student section, as they create a wave of energy and excitement that can help propel the Miami Hurricanes to victory. The section is located behind the basket at the south end of the Watsco Center, and it’s always full of students dressed in orange and green, waving signs and cheering on their team. The Storm Surge is a well-respected student section throughout college basketball, and it has been featured in national media outlets like ESPN and Sports Illustrated. The section has also won numerous awards, including the Naismith Student Section of the Year award in 2013. The Storm Surge is a beloved part of the University of Miami basketball program, and it’s a testament to the passion and spirit of the students who make up the section.
