Apple Launches New Device Leasing Program, Letting Customers Upgrade Without Buying

Apple Device Leasing Program

Apple is offering customers a new way to get its latest technology without paying the full purchase price upfront. The company has officially launched Apple Upgrade, a device leasing program that allows eligible customers in the United States to lease select Apple products for a monthly payment and upgrade more easily when new models become available.

The program marks a shift from traditional financing by allowing customers to lease devices instead of owning them immediately. Similar to leasing a vehicle, users make fixed monthly payments during the lease term and decide at the end whether to return the device, purchase it, or upgrade to a newer model.

More Than Just iPhones

Unlike Apple’s previous iPhone Upgrade Program, the new leasing service extends to a wider range of products. Customers can lease iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches, giving consumers more flexibility when choosing how they want to pay for Apple’s hardware.

Monthly pricing depends on the device selected, storage configuration, and lease length. Apple says iPhone leases start at $17.99 per month, with additional options available for higher-end models and other devices.

Flexible Upgrade Options

One of the program’s biggest selling points is flexibility. Instead of committing to owning a device for years, customers can choose to upgrade to newer hardware when their lease ends. Those who prefer to keep their device can purchase it by paying its remaining value, while others can simply return it and begin a new lease.

Customers may also reduce their monthly payment by trading in an eligible Apple device when starting a new lease.

Simple Enrollment Process

Apple Upgrade is available through Apple retail stores, the Apple Store app, and Apple’s website. The company says customers complete a soft credit check through Klarna during the application process, which does not impact their credit score. No down payment is required, and the first payment is due after the device has shipped or been picked up.

Customers can also add AppleCare+ coverage to their lease for an additional monthly cost, helping protect against accidental damage and hardware repairs.

Appealing to Frequent Upgraders

The new leasing model is aimed at consumers who prefer having the latest technology without making a large upfront investment. Rather than paying the full retail price of a new device every few years, customers can spread costs into predictable monthly payments while maintaining the option to upgrade regularly.

For users who tend to replace their devices as soon as new models are released, leasing may offer a more convenient alternative to purchasing outright. However, those who typically keep their devices for several years may find buying remains the more cost-effective option over the long term.

A Growing Focus on Subscription Revenue

The launch of Apple Upgrade reflects the company’s broader strategy of expanding recurring revenue through subscription-style services. In recent years, Apple has steadily grown its ecosystem of monthly offerings, including cloud storage, streaming entertainment, music, gaming, and device protection plans.

By extending that model to hardware, Apple is giving customers another payment option while creating a more consistent upgrade cycle for its devices. As consumer preferences continue shifting toward flexible payment plans, the company is positioning itself to meet demand with a leasing program designed to make premium technology more accessible.
