Avalanche Rally Past Penguins 5-2 Behind Nathan MacKinnon and Artturi Lehkonen

Colorado Scores Five Straight Goals to Overcome Early Two Goal Deficit

The Colorado Avalanche overcame an early two goal deficit to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2 on Friday night, rallying behind a three assist performance and a power-play goal from Nathan MacKinnon and a two-goal effort from Artturi Lehkonen.

T.J. Hughes also scored his first NHL goal, while goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood recovered from a shaky start to finish with 29 saves as Colorado scored five unanswered goals to secure the comeback victory. Pittsburgh appeared to have control early after Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust scored 29 seconds apart midway through the first period to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead.

However, Colorado responded with a relentless offensive push, scoring three times in the second period to take command of the game. The Avalanche continued to apply pressure, completing the rally with two more goals to hand Pittsburgh a frustrating defeat after its promising start.

Lehkonen, Landeskog Lead Colorado’s Second Period Surge

Lehkonen sparked Colorado’s comeback by scoring just 25 seconds into the second period to cut Pittsburgh’s lead to 2-1. His second goal of the night brought the Avalanche even and shifted the momentum firmly in their favor.

Captain Gabriel Landeskog followed less than four minutes later, scoring his 83rd career go-ahead goal to put Colorado in front. The milestone moved Landeskog into a tie with Mikko Rantanen for the sixth most go ahead goals in Avalanche history. Hall of Famer Joe Sakic leads the franchise list with 210.

With the Avalanche finding their rhythm offensively, Pittsburgh struggled to slow the home team’s attack. Colorado’s ability to capitalize on its scoring opportunities turned an early deficit into a commanding advantage.

Hughes Scores First NHL Goal as MacKinnon Reaches Milestones

Hughes added a memorable moment to Colorado’s victory by scoring his first NHL goal. The young forward found space down low and poked home a pass from MacKinnon, prompting a celebration from his teammates.

Defenseman Cale Makar embraced Hughes following the goal, while Landeskog playfully squirted the rookie with water as he made his way past the bench. The lighthearted celebration highlighted the significance of Hughes’ first career tally in a game that showcased Colorado’s offensive depth.

MacKinnon finished with three assists and a power play goal, continuing to demonstrate his importance to the Avalanche attack. He also was awarded a penalty shot during the game but was denied by Penguins goaltender Arturs Silovs. MacKinnon improved to 12-6-3 in games against Sidney Crosby, his longtime friend from Nova Scotia.

Crosby Moves Up NHL’s All Time Assist List

Despite Pittsburgh’s loss, Crosby reached another significant milestone in his remarkable career. The Penguins captain recorded his 1,110th career assist, moving into sole possession of seventh place on the NHL’s all-time assists list.

Crosby also moved within one assist of matching Hall of Famer Ray Bourque’s 1,111 assists with the Boston Bruins for the most assists by a player with a single franchise. The milestone provided a bright spot for Pittsburgh, which could not maintain its early advantage after Malkin and Rust put the team ahead in the opening period.

Avalanche Power Play Begins New Era

Colorado finished 1-for-4 on the power play in the debut of assistant coach Brett McLean, who has taken over responsibility for the unit following Dave Hakstol’s departure. Hakstol left the Avalanche to become head coach of the men’s hockey program at Arizona State, placing McLean in charge of improving Colorado’s performance with the man advantage.

Although the Avalanche converted only once on four power-play opportunities, their five goal outburst demonstrated the team’s ability to generate offense in multiple situations. Blackwood’s recovery after Pittsburgh’s quick start also helped Colorado settle down defensively and complete the comeback. The victory gave the Avalanche another strong offensive showing, with MacKinnon, Lehkonen, Landeskog and Hughes all playing key roles in the win.

Up Coming NHL Games for Penguins and Avalanche

The Penguins will look to rebound when they visit the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday night. Colorado begins a two game road swing Monday night against the Philadelphia Flyers before continuing its trip.
