The Orlando Magic continued their dominance over the Miami Heat this season Saturday night, pulling out a 121-117 victory behind a strong performance from Paolo Banchero. The Magic star scored 27 points to help Orlando secure its seventh straight win while becoming just the second team in the last 30 years to defeat the same opponent five times in a single season.
Desmond Bane added 21 points for Orlando, while Wendell Carter Jr. contributed 15 as the Magic improved to 38-28. The win also moved Orlando one game ahead of Miami in the race for fifth place in the Eastern Conference and pushed the team to 10 games over .500 for the first time since the end of the 2023–24 season.
Orlando appeared in control for much of the night, building a lead as large as 22 points before Miami made a dramatic late push. The Heat clawed back to within two points twice in the final 18.5 seconds, but the Magic held on to seal the victory and extend their winning streak.
Miami (38-30) was led by Jaime Jaquez Jr. with 22 points, while Bam Adebayo and Norman Powell each added 20. The loss snapped Miami’s season-best seven-game winning streak.
The game also marked the return of Tyler Herro and Powell from injuries. Herro started and finished with 10 points, while Powell came off the bench for the first time since the 2023-24 season when he played for the Los Angeles Clippers.
The five-game sweep of Miami is a rare occurrence in modern NBA scheduling. For decades, the league’s format typically limited teams to four meetings within their division. However, the introduction of the NBA Cup and the addition of two extra games to each team’s schedule after pool play has created opportunities for five-game season series. The Magic-Heat matchup is now the 13th such instance over the last three seasons.
It also marked Miami’s first 0-5 season against a single opponent since 1992-93, when the New York Knicks — coached at the time by current Heat president Pat Riley — swept the season series.
Orlando will look to extend its winning streak when it visits the Atlanta Hawks on Monday, while Miami will try to rebound Tuesday when it travels to face the Charlotte Hornets.
