Cincinnati’s New-Look Defense Sparks Week 1 Victory

The Cincinnati Bengals opened the NFL season with a statement performance from their new-look defense, forcing four turnovers and turning Tampa Bay Buccaneers mistakes into 24 points in a 33-27 victory Sunday.

The win was a complete effort from all three phases, something that had been difficult to consistently say about the Bengals over the past couple of seasons. Cincinnati’s defense created the opportunities, the offense capitalized on them, and kicker Evan McPherson delivered when called upon as the Bengals held off a late Tampa Bay push.

Bengals Capitalize on Buccaneers Turnovers

The Buccaneers scored on their opening possession when Chase McLaughlin connected on a 34-yard field goal, but Tampa Bay immediately began giving the Bengals opportunities. The Buccaneers turned the ball over on each of their next three possessions, and Cincinnati converted all three mistakes into touchdowns.

The first came when quarterback Baker Mayfield was sacked by Myles Murphy and Barrett Carter at the Tampa Bay 26-yard line. Demetrius Knight recovered the loose ball at the 27 and raced up the sideline for his first NFL touchdown, giving the Bengals their first defensive touchdown of the season. It was Cincinnati’s first fumble recovery for a touchdown since Sam Hubbard returned a fumble 99 yards against Baltimore in the 2022 wild-card round.

The Bengals extended their advantage when edge rusher Boye Mafe recovered a Bucky Irving fumble at the Tampa Bay 33. Seven plays later, Joe Burrow found tight end Mike Gesicki for a 2-yard touchdown, putting Cincinnati ahead 14-3. Chase Brown then added a 5-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter, pushing the Bengals’ lead to 21-3.

Tampa Bay’s most damaging turnover came late in the first half. Bryan Cook recovered Mayfield’s fumble in the end zone after Barrett Carter stripped the ball from the quarterback at the Bengals’ 4-yard line as Mayfield attempted to stretch for additional yards. The turnover prevented the Buccaneers from scoring and gave Cincinnati another major swing in momentum.

Burrow, McPherson Keep Bengals in Control

While the defense created the opportunities, Cincinnati’s offense did enough to keep Tampa Bay at arm’s length. After opening the game with a three-and-out, Burrow guided the Bengals to points on six of their next seven drives. The only interruption came when Tampa Bay rookie linebacker Jeremiah Trotter returned an interception for a touchdown.

Burrow completed 25 of 35 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown, efficiently moving the ball against the Buccaneers’ defense and taking advantage of the short fields created by Cincinnati’s defense. McPherson was also perfect on the day, connecting on four field-goal attempts. His biggest contributions came in the second half, when he drilled kicks from 55 and 58 yards.

The two long-distance field goals made McPherson the first kicker in Bengals history to make two field goals of at least 55 yards in the same game. It marked just the fourth time in NFL history that a kicker accomplished the feat in Week 1.

New Bengals Add Immediate Impact

Cincinnati’s offseason additions on defense immediately made their presence felt. Mafe and Cook, both signed in free agency, played major roles in the victory. Each forced and recovered a fumble, while Mafe also recorded one of Cincinnati’s four sacks.

The Bengals consistently pressured Mayfield and turned Tampa Bay’s offensive mistakes into points, giving Cincinnati the type of complementary football it has been searching for.

Mayfield finished 23 of 28 for 216 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a score, but his three turnovers proved too costly. Two of his fumbles came on sacks, while the third occurred during his scramble near the goal line.

The loss was Mayfield’s first in a season opener during his four seasons with Tampa Bay. It also came just days after the Buccaneers quarterback signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension.

Bengals Start Season With Statement Win

Cincinnati’s 33-27 victory was far from perfect, but it showcased a team capable of winning in multiple ways. Burrow moved the offense, McPherson delivered from long range, and the defense repeatedly changed the game with takeaways.

Most importantly, the Bengals avoided the slow start that has plagued them in recent seasons and showed the impact their revamped defense can have when it creates extra possessions. Cincinnati will now look to build on the victory when it travels to face the Houston Texans next Sunday. Buccaneers will host the Cleveland Browns next Sunday.
