Bills Outlast Rams 37-34 in Overtime Thriller as Josh Allen Delivers in Clutch

NFL Monday Night Football in Week 5

The Buffalo Bills survived a wild back and forth battle against the Los Angeles Rams, earning a dramatic 37-34 overtime victory on Monday Night Football in Week 5 behind another extraordinary performance from quarterback Josh Allen.

Allen accounted for 331 total yards and two touchdowns, and Tyler Bass kicked a 45-yard field goal with 1:55 remaining in overtime to seal the victory. The decisive kick came after Buffalo’s defense delivered a crucial special teams play, with Greg Rousseau blocking Harrison Mevis’ field goal attempt to give the Bills another opportunity to win.

Allen passed for 210 yards and rushed for 121 more as Buffalo improved to 4-1, marking the sixth time in eight seasons the Bills have started a season with four victories in their first five games. It was the first time the franchise had accomplished the feat under rookie head coach Joe Brady.

The victory also marked Allen’s first career overtime win, as Buffalo outlasted Matthew Stafford and the Rams in an offensive shootout between teams led by the NFL’s last two Most Valuable Player award winners. Stafford threw for 383 yards and three touchdowns, while Los Angeles fell to 2-3 and below .500 after five games for the fourth time in five seasons.

Bills Rally Behind Josh Allen to Force Dramatic Finish

Buffalo and Los Angeles traded momentum throughout a game that featured six consecutive lead changes, with neither team able to create enough separation to put the other away. The Bills appeared to be in trouble late in regulation, but running back James Cook scored his second touchdown of the night with 1:39 remaining to give Buffalo another advantage.

The Rams answered with a determined drive led by Stafford, who completed six of seven passes to move Los Angeles to the Buffalo 1-yard line. Rather than use a timeout, Rams coach Sean McVay allowed the offense to continue its push toward the end zone. Kyren Williams then powered across the goal line on a 1-yard run with just four seconds remaining, tying the game at 34-34 and sending the contest into overtime.

The late touchdown capped another productive performance by Stafford, who repeatedly found ways to exploit Buffalo’s defense and keep the Rams within striking distance. However, Allen and the Bills had one more opportunity to finish the job.

Greg Rousseau’s Block Gives Buffalo Another Chance

Buffalo opened overtime with another promising drive, but disaster struck when Cook fumbled deep in Rams territory. Nate Landman punched the ball loose, and Aaron Donald recovered for Los Angeles, seemingly ending the Bills’ opportunity to secure the victory.

Stafford took advantage of the turnover and guided the Rams to the Buffalo 30-yard line, putting Mevis in position to attempt a potential game winning field goal. McVay’s offense played conservatively on third down, a decision that drew scrutiny after the game. The Rams then turned to Mevis, who had already missed one field goal earlier in the contest.

Rousseau came through with the play of the night, getting his outstretched hand on Mevis’ attempt to block the kick and preserve the tie. The defensive stand gave Allen and the Buffalo offense another chance, and the quarterback made certain the opportunity would not go to waste.

Allen broke loose for scrambles of 19 and 13 yards, quickly moving the Bills into field-goal range. Brady elected to send Bass onto the field on second down with nearly two minutes remaining in overtime, trusting his kicker to finish the game.

Bass blasted the 45-yard attempt through the uprights with 1:55 remaining. He immediately ran away in celebration before the officials signaled that the kick was good, securing Buffalo’s thrilling victory.

Puka Nacua, Davante Adams Lead Rams’ Offensive Attack

Despite the heartbreaking defeat, Los Angeles produced an impressive offensive performance against Buffalo. Puka Nacua delivered a career high 17 receptions for 138 yards and a touchdown, consistently giving Stafford a reliable target throughout the contest. His ability to find openings in the Bills’ coverage helped the Rams sustain drives and remain competitive until the final seconds.

Davante Adams also played a significant role, catching two touchdown passes. His second scoring reception gave Los Angeles a late advantage with 7:14 remaining in regulation. Adams’ second touchdown also tied him with Larry Fitzgerald for the sixth-most receiving touchdowns in NFL history, with 121.

Williams added his late game-tying touchdown, while Blake Corum rushed for another score. Tight end Tyler Higbee contributed five receptions for 83 yards as the Rams repeatedly found success moving the ball against Buffalo. Stafford’s 383 passing yards and three touchdown passes demonstrated the potential of the Los Angeles offense, but the team’s inability to finish the game proved costly.

Special Teams Mistakes Prove Costly for Los Angeles

The Rams’ special teams struggles were a significant factor in the defeat, particularly after Mevis missed two field-goal attempts. McVay expressed frustration with the team’s latest special teams setback and acknowledged that his conservative play calling before the potential game-winning attempt was a decision he would have to evaluate.

Mevis’ three missed field goals this season are the most in the league, adding to the pressure on a unit that has struggled to deliver consistently. Buffalo, meanwhile, benefited from Rousseau’s timely block and Bass’ clutch kick. The contrast between the two teams’ special teams performances ultimately proved decisive in a game where the offenses combined for 71 points.

The finish also continued the recent history of high scoring games between the franchises. Their previous meeting in December 2024 produced 902 combined yards in the Rams’ 44-42 victory, and Monday night’s matchup delivered another memorable offensive showdown.

Bills Improve to 4-1 as Rams Look to Rebound

For Buffalo, the victory provided another example of Allen’s ability to carry the offense through difficult situations. Even after Cook’s costly overtime fumble threatened to erase the quarterback’s earlier efforts, Allen responded with two crucial scrambles to put Bass in position to win the game.

The Bills’ defense and special teams also delivered when the team needed them most, allowing Buffalo to escape with a victory after the Rams appeared poised to steal the game. Buffalo will look to build on its 4-1 start when it travels to Las Vegas on Sunday.

Los Angeles, meanwhile, must regroup after letting a late lead slip away and failing to capitalize on its overtime opportunity. The Rams will return home Sunday to host the Arizona Cardinals, hoping to get back on track and climb above .500.
