Marchand Injured In Second Period After Collision With Goal Post
Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand left Tuesday night’s 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings with a left leg injury after a frightening collision late in the second period. Marchand was injured with 52.6 seconds remaining in the period after taking a stick to the face from Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke. The contact caused Marchand to twist around and collide with the right goal post, with his left leg bending backward awkwardly during the collision.
Marchand remained down on the ice for several minutes while being examined by an athletic trainer. Teammates Brady Tkachuk and Niko Mikkola eventually helped him to the bench, but Marchand was unable to put weight on his left leg. He was then helped back to the dressing room and did not return for the third period. Panthers coach Paul Maurice did not have an update on Marchand’s condition following the game.
Marchand Had Just Returned From Injury
The injury comes just two days after Marchand made his season debut for Florida. The 38-year-old forward is in his third season with the Panthers after spending the first 16 seasons of his NHL career with the Boston Bruins.
Florida acquired Marchand in a trade with Boston in March 2025, and he quickly became part of a Panthers team that went on to win its second consecutive Stanley Cup that season. The Panthers’ attempt to defend their championship last season was hampered by injuries, and the team is already dealing with another significant health concern early this season.
Panthers Also Dealing With Barkov Injury
Florida began its four-game West Coast trip with Aleksander Barkov suffering a left leg injury during an overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday. Maurice said earlier Tuesday that the Panthers captain is expected to miss six to eight weeks but will not require surgery.
Barkov is one of the NHL’s premier two way centers, making his absence another major challenge for Florida as the Panthers navigate the opening stretch of the season. Marchand’s injury now adds another key veteran to Florida’s injury concerns, although the Panthers had no immediate timetable for his return.
Clarke Penalized After Marchand Injury
Clarke received a four minute double minor for the play that injured Marchand. It was the second penalty of the game for the Kings defenseman, who was previously called for interference against Florida forward Eetu Luostarinen earlier in the period. Luostarinen was shaken up after taking a cross-check from Clarke and briefly left the ice with what appeared to be a stinger.
He was able to return to the game and finish the contest. Despite losing Marchand, the Panthers held on for a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles, with Matthew Tkachuk scoring the go-ahead goal in the third period. The bigger concern for Florida, however, will be the health of Marchand and how long the veteran forward could be sidelined.
