Panthers Roll Past Winnipeg Jets Behind Three Power Play Goals
The Florida Panthers continued their recent resurgence Tuesday night, earning a convincing 5-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets behind Carter Verhaeghe’s two goals, four assists from Matthew Tkachuk and a dominant performance on the power play. Brady Tkachuk contributed a goal and two assists, while Niko Mikkola recorded a goal and an assist as Florida extended Winnipeg’s losing streak to six games.
Sam Reinhart also scored for the Panthers, who converted three times on five power-play opportunities. Seth Jones added three assists, and goaltender Akira Schmid stopped 24 shots to earn his fourth victory in five starts. Florida scored three times by the 10:18 mark of the first period, putting Winnipeg in an early hole it could not overcome.
The Panthers controlled the pace offensively and capitalized on their special teams opportunities to secure their second win in four games on a road trip that began with consecutive defeats. The victory allowed Florida to salvage its four game trip with a pair of wins and build momentum heading into the next stretch of its schedule.
Tkachuk Brothers Lead Florida’s Offensive Attack
Matthew and Brady Tkachuk continued to demonstrate their offensive chemistry, combining for a goal, two assists from Brady and four assists from Matthew as Florida overwhelmed Winnipeg’s defense. The brothers have combined for 35 points through the Panthers’ first 13 games of the season, providing a significant boost to Florida’s attack.
Reinhart added to the offensive surge with a precise finish on the power play. He one-timed a pass from Brady Tkachuk over the shoulder of Winnipeg goaltender Clay Stevenson and beneath the crossbar, giving Florida a 4-1 lead.
Verhaeghe’s two-goal performance helped put the game out of reach, while Mikkola also contributed on the scoresheet. Florida’s ability to generate offense from multiple lines and capitalize on special teams proved too much for the struggling Jets.
Jets’ Losing Streak Reaches Six Games
Winnipeg’s early-season momentum has disappeared as the Jets continue searching for answers. After opening the season with a 4-1-1 record, they have now gone six consecutive games without a victory. Adam Lowry provided Winnipeg’s lone goal, scoring his second of the season and first short-handed. Stevenson finished with 19 saves but was unable to slow Florida’s early offensive onslaught.
The Jets’ power play has also become a major concern. Winnipeg has gone 0-for-14 with the man advantage over its last five games and is just 2-for-18 on home ice this season. Offensive production has been another challenge. The Jets have scored more than three goals only once this season, when they defeated the Minnesota Wild 5-2 on Oct. 13. Their inability to generate consistent scoring has contributed to the current slide. Against Florida, the Jets struggled to contain the Panthers’ attack and could not take advantage of their own opportunities to change the game’s momentum.
Panthers’ Power Play Continues to Produce
Florida’s special teams played a decisive role in the victory, with the Panthers finishing 3-for-5 on the power play. The performance extended their recent run of success with the man advantage, as they have scored 13 power-play goals over their last eight games. The Panthers’ efficiency on special teams, combined with contributions from Verhaeghe, the Tkachuk brothers, Reinhart and Mikkola, underscored the depth of their offensive attack.
Schmid also delivered when called upon, stopping 24 shots to help Florida maintain control after building its early lead. With Jones contributing three assists, the Panthers received strong performances throughout their lineup. For Winnipeg, the defeat highlighted the need to improve both its power play execution and its ability to limit opponents’ scoring chances before the losing streak grows longer.
Up Coming NHL Games for Panthers and Jets
The Panthers will host the Jets again Friday in the second meeting of a back-to-back stretch in Florida for Winnipeg. Before returning to face the Panthers, the Jets will visit the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday. Florida will look to carry its improved offensive production and power-play success into Friday’s rematch, while Winnipeg will attempt to snap its six game skid and rediscover the form that helped it open the season with a winning record.
