Penguins Shut Out Panthers 4-0, Spoil Cooper Black’s NHL Debut

Panthers Goalie Cooper Black’s Historic NHL Debut

The Pittsburgh Penguins spoiled Florida Panthers goaltender Cooper Black’s historic NHL debut Thursday night, earning a 4-0 victory behind 25 saves from Arturs Silovs as the Panthers suffered their second consecutive loss.

Black, who stands 6-foot-9, became the tallest goaltender ever to appear in an NHL regular-season game. The 25-year-old made 18 saves in his debut, but Pittsburgh found enough openings to secure the shutout victory and get back on track following a disappointing Western Conference road trip.

Nick Robertson scored twice for the Penguins, while Hendrix Lapierre and Evgeni Malkin each recorded a goal and an assist. Silovs delivered a composed performance at the other end, earning his second shutout of the season and the fourth of his NHL career.

Robertson Leads Pittsburgh’s Offensive Response

The Penguins entered Thursday’s matchup looking to rebound from a difficult road trip that featured losses to the Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights and Utah Mammoth. Pittsburgh struggled throughout the trip, often finding itself outplayed by its opponents.

Head coach Dan Muse shuffled his forward lines in search of a spark, and the adjustments paid off against Florida. The Penguins generated enough offensive pressure to test Black, who showed flashes of promise despite the final score.

Black was sharp early as the Panthers struggled to find their rhythm following an emotionally charged loss to the Ottawa Senators the previous night. However, Pittsburgh gradually took control and capitalized on its opportunities.

Robertson scored twice to pace the Penguins, while Lapierre and Malkin provided additional offense. Malkin’s third goal in four games gave Pittsburgh another important contribution from one of its veteran leaders.

Black Makes NHL History Despite Panthers Loss

Black’s debut marked a memorable milestone, even as the Panthers struggled to keep pace with Pittsburgh. At 6-foot-9, the Michigan native established himself as the tallest goaltender to play in an NHL regular-season game.

He was recently recalled from Florida’s American Hockey League affiliate in Charlotte after goaltender Jacob Markstrom sustained a shoulder injury. Black responded to the opportunity with 18 saves, keeping the Penguins from running away with the game early before Pittsburgh eventually broke through.

The circumstances were challenging for Black, who made his first NHL appearance with Florida playing its second game in as many nights. The Panthers were unable to generate enough offense to overcome Pittsburgh’s attack, and their efforts were further frustrated by Silovs, who turned aside all 25 shots he faced.

Lapierre, Malkin Help Seal the Shutout

Lapierre doubled Pittsburgh’s lead at the halfway point of the game after receiving a well-placed pass from Ville Koivunen on a rush. The goal gave the Penguins additional breathing room and put more pressure on Florida to respond.

Malkin continued his recent scoring surge, recording a goal and an assist to help Pittsburgh maintain control. His goal proved more than enough for Silovs, who was challenged only sporadically as the Penguins protected their advantage.

The shutout provided a welcome turnaround for Pittsburgh after its difficult trip out West. However, the victory came amid concern surrounding 19-year-old forward Ben Kindel, who collapsed aboard the team’s flight back to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Kindel spent the night in a Salt Lake City hospital for observation before returning to the Penguins’ facility Thursday. The team placed him on injured reserve but remained hopeful that he could return to practice as early as next week.

Up Coming NHL Games for Panthers and Penguins

The Panthers will continue their four game road trip Sunday against the Chicago Blackhawks as they look to rebound from consecutive defeats. Florida will need to rediscover its offensive rhythm and provide more support for its goaltenders to avoid extending its losing streak. The Penguins return home to host the Nashville Predators on Saturday, hoping Thursday’s performance marks a turning point after their frustrating Western Conference road trip.
