The Tampa Bay Buccaneers received an injury scare involving one of the most important pieces of their revamped defense, but the latest news surrounding rookie pass rusher Rueben Bain Jr. appears encouraging.
Bain suffered an AC sprain during Tuesday’s joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The injury is considered “nothing serious,” and Bain is expected to be ready for Tampa Bay’s regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Buccaneers are holding joint practices with Jacksonville this week ahead of Friday’s preseason finale. Bain participated in Tuesday’s session but was a spectator during Wednesday’s practice as Tampa Bay takes a cautious approach with its first-round pick.
The timing of the injury is noteworthy because Bain is expected to have an immediate role in Tampa Bay’s defensive plans. The Buccaneers selected the former Miami Hurricanes standout with the 15th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft after he established himself as one of the nation’s premier edge defenders.
Bain was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year after recording 9.5 sacks for a Miami team that finished as the national championship runner-up. His combination of explosiveness, physicality and pass-rushing ability made him one of the most highly regarded defensive prospects in the draft.
Tampa Bay expects Bain to start at weakside linebacker as part of a significantly revamped defensive unit. The Buccaneers also added veterans Alex Anzalone, A’Shawn Robinson, Christian Rozeboom and Al-Quadin Muhammad during the offseason, giving Todd Bowles additional experience and versatility up front.
Bain had generated plenty of attention throughout training camp, with the Buccaneers highlighting his explosiveness and potential to make an immediate impact.
For now, the most important takeaway for Tampa Bay is that Bain’s injury does not appear likely to threaten his availability for the regular season. The Buccaneers can afford to be cautious with their prized rookie during the final stages of preseason preparation rather than risk turning a minor AC sprain into a larger problem.
The Buccaneers open the 2026 regular season on the road against Cincinnati on Sept. 13. If Bain’s recovery continues as expected, Tampa Bay should have its first-round defensive centerpiece available when the games begin to count.
