Capitals Beat Rangers 3-1 as Boone Jenner Scores Go Ahead Goal

Igor Shesterkin Leaves With Leg Injury

The Washington Capitals defeated the New York Rangers 3-1 on Friday night behind Boone Jenner’s go-ahead goal late in the second period, but the victory was overshadowed by a potentially significant leg injury to Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin.

Jenner capitalized on a costly defensive-zone turnover to break a 1-1 tie with 2:22 remaining in the second period, beating backup goaltender Dylan Garand with a wrist shot from the slot. Timothy Liljegren also scored for Washington, while Tom Wilson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with less than one second remaining.

Logan Thompson stopped 21 shots for the Capitals, who overcame an early deficit to hand the Rangers their first loss after four consecutive victories. Alexis Lafreniere scored New York’s lone goal on a first period power play, extending his recent scoring surge.

Capitals Take Control Late in the Second Period

Washington found the decisive breakthrough late in the second period when Jenner intercepted an errant pass by 20 year old rookie Cole Beaudoin, a top prospect playing in just his second NHL game.

After gaining possession in the offensive zone, Jenner fired a wrist shot from the slot past Garand to give the Capitals a 2-1 lead with 2:22 remaining in the period. The goal proved to be the difference as Washington tightened defensively and protected its advantage through the third period.

Beaudoin was originally selected in the first round by Utah before being traded to New York last summer in a deal involving center Vincent Trocheck. The costly mistake came at a difficult moment for the Rangers, who were attempting to extend their winning streak.

Timothy Liljegren and Tom Wilson Provide the Offense

Liljegren also found the back of the net for Washington, helping the Capitals establish the offensive production they needed to overcome New York’s early lead. Thompson delivered a steady performance in goal, making 21 saves to keep the Rangers from mounting a comeback.

Wilson added the finishing touch with an empty-net goal in the final second, completing the 3-1 victory. Garand made 11 saves after replacing Shesterkin midway through the second period, facing the challenge of entering the game unexpectedly in a tight contest.

Igor Shesterkin Leaves Game With Right-Leg Injury

The most concerning moment of the night came when Shesterkin suffered an apparent right-leg injury while attempting to return to his crease. The 30 year old Russian goaltender came well out of the net to challenge a shooter before falling as he scrambled back toward the goal. During the awkward sequence, Shesterkin jammed his right skate into the right post as he slid back into the crease and subsequently collapsed into the net in pain.

Shesterkin remained on the ice for several minutes while receiving medical attention, holding his right knee as trainers evaluated the injury. He was unable to put weight on his right leg and had to be helped off the ice by teammates. Shesterkin stopped 13 shots before leaving the game, with Garand taking over in relief. The Rangers did not immediately have a definitive diagnosis available from the information provided.

Injury Raises Concerns for New York

Shesterkin’s injury is a significant concern for New York, given his importance to the team and his history of lower body problems. The 2022 Vezina Trophy winner missed a month last season with a lower body injury, a setback that contributed to a difficult campaign for the Rangers, who finished last in the Eastern Conference.

Shesterkin had started this season strongly, entering Friday’s game with a 3-1 record and a 1.76 goals against average. His early season form had provided New York with a dependable foundation as the club looked to build momentum.

The injury also comes shortly after Shesterkin made franchise history. Last week, he became the first goaltender in Rangers history to score a goal when he sent the puck the length of the ice into an empty net late in New York’s home opener against Tampa Bay. The Rangers will now await further information on their star goaltender’s condition as they prepare for their next game.

New York’s Winning Streak Ends at Four

Lafreniere provided the Rangers’ lone goal with a first period power play tally, continuing an impressive stretch of production. The goal was his fourth of the season, with all four coming over the previous two games. Lafreniere recorded a hat trick in Tuesday night’s 5-2 victory over the New York Islanders, including two empty-net goals, and carried that scoring momentum into Friday’s matchup.

Despite his continued offensive contributions, New York could not generate enough scoring to overcome Washington’s second-period advantage. The Rangers were held without another goal as Thompson and the Capitals defense closed out the victory. The loss ended New York’s four-game winning streak, while Washington earned an important win in a game defined by Jenner’s timely goal and the uncertainty surrounding Shesterkin’s injury.

What’s Next for the Capitals and Rangers?

Both teams return to action Sunday, with the Rangers looking to regroup at home and the Capitals aiming to build on Friday’s victory. Rangers host the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. Capitals host the Seattle Kraken on Sunday.

Washington will look to carry its momentum into the next game, while New York’s immediate priority will be monitoring Shesterkin’s condition and determining its goaltending plans moving forward.
