Lightning Hold Off Red Wings 4-2 Behind Brayden Point’s Two Goals

Lightning Extend Home Winning Streak to Seven Games

The Tampa Bay Lightning continued their strong play on home ice Tuesday night, earning a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings behind two goals from Brayden Point and another strong performance from goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy. Point scored twice, Anthony Cirelli added a goal, and Ryan McDonagh sealed the victory with an empty net goal in the final second as Tampa Bay extended its home winning streak to seven games.

Reigning NHL MVP Nikita Kucherov recorded two assists in his first home game since reportedly requesting a trade from the Lightning. Vasilevskiy turned aside 19 shots to help Tampa Bay secure the victory. Lucas Raymond and J.T. Compher scored for Detroit, which made a late push but couldn’t find the equalizer despite pulling its goalie for an extra attacker during the final three minutes.

Point Gives Lightning Early Two Goal Advantage

Tampa Bay wasted little time establishing control, with Point opening the scoring on a power-play goal in the first period. Point found the back of the net from the low slot after receiving a centering pass from Kucherov. Although he didn’t get all of the shot, the puck slipped past Detroit goaltender John Gibson to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead.

Point struck again 5:07 later, snapping a shot over Gibson’s glove to extend Tampa Bay’s advantage to 2-0. Kucherov once again set up the goal with another excellent pass. Gibson stopped 11 of 13 shots in the opening period but was replaced by Daniil Tarasov to begin the second.

Cirelli Extends Lead Before Detroit Responds

The Lightning continued their offensive pressure in the second period when Cirelli scored his fifth goal of the season, lifting a shot past Tarasov into the top-left corner to make it 3-0. Detroit finally got on the scoreboard midway through the period when Raymond fired a shot from the left point past Vasilevskiy, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Red Wings carried that momentum into the third period, getting within one goal less than six minutes into the final frame. Compher converted on the power play, blasting a shot from the right circle underneath Vasilevskiy’s left pad to make it 3-2 and set up a tense finish.

McDonagh Seals Victory as Kucherov Trade Situation Continues

Detroit pulled Tarasov for an extra attacker during the final three minutes, putting considerable pressure on Vasilevskiy and the Tampa Bay defense in search of the tying goal. However, the Lightning held their ground, with Vasilevskiy making the necessary stops to preserve the lead.

McDonagh finally put the game away, sliding the puck down the ice and into the empty net with just one second remaining to secure the 4-2 victory. Kucherov’s two assists continued an impressive stretch of production since informing the organization of his desire to be traded. He has recorded five assists over his last two games. Kucherov said Monday that his trade request stems from feeling disrespected by what he described as a lack of communication with general manager Julien BriseBois.

The superstar winger is playing the final season of his eight-year, $76 million contract signed in 2018. During his time in Tampa Bay, Kucherov has helped the Lightning capture two Stanley Cup championships, led the NHL in scoring three times and earned the Hart Trophy as the league’s Most Valuable Player in 2018-19 and 2025-26. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Kucherov’s future, Tampa Bay continues to deliver results on the ice, extending its home winning streak to seven games.

Up Coming NHL Games for Red Wings and Lightning

The Red Wings return home Thursday night to host the Vegas Golden Knights as they look to bounce back from the loss. The Lightning will also be back in action Thursday night, hosting the Chicago Blackhawks as they attempt to extend their impressive home winning streak to eight games.
