Devils Extend Winning Streak to Four Games
The New Jersey Devils welcomed goaltender Connor Hellebuyck with a convincing performance Tuesday night, as the three-time Vezina Trophy winner stopped 16 of 17 shots in his debut to lead the Devils to a 5-1 victory over the Dallas Stars. Nico Hischier scored twice, while Jack Hughes, Luke Hughes and Jesper Boqvist also found the net as New Jersey extended its winning streak to four games. Hellebuyck made his first appearance for New Jersey just four days after being acquired from the Winnipeg Jets following his suspension for failing to report to training camp.
The veteran goaltender earned his first victory since April 9, when he helped Winnipeg defeat St. Louis 3-2. The Devils’ offensive outburst was particularly impressive against a Dallas team that entered the night leading the NHL with a 1.68 goals against average. New Jersey’s five goals marked a season high allowed by the Stars, whose five game winning streak came to an end. Casey DeSmith, making his third start of the season for Dallas, finished with 22 saves after allowing just two goals in each of his previous appearances.
Hischier Leads New Jersey’s Offensive Surge
Hischier, the Devils’ captain in his 10th season with the franchise, established control early by scoring twice to give New Jersey a 2-0 advantage. His first goal came at 2:41 of the opening period, and he struck again just 38 seconds into the second period. Dallas challenged the opening goal for goaltender interference involving Timo Meier, but the challenge was unsuccessful, and the goal stood.
Hischier entered the night with a team-high seven goals and recorded his second two-goal performance of the season. His early production gave New Jersey the cushion it needed to control the game and put pressure on a Dallas defense that had been among the league’s best through the opening stretch of the season. Boqvist increased the Devils’ lead to 3-0 midway through the second period, putting Dallas in an increasingly difficult position.
Stars Briefly Respond Before Luke Hughes Restores Three Goal Lead
Dallas finally broke through at 16:08 of the second period when Justin Hryckowian redirected a shot past Hellebuyck, cutting the deficit to 3-1 and giving the Stars a brief spark. However, New Jersey responded almost immediately. Just 28 seconds after Hryckowian’s goal, Luke Hughes scored to restore the Devils’ three-goal advantage and halt any momentum Dallas had b
Jack Hughes added another goal for New Jersey, completing a productive night for the Devils’ offense and helping secure the 5-1 victory. The performance also came against a Dallas penalty-killing unit that had been particularly effective. The Stars successfully killed all three New Jersey power plays, extending their streak to 22 consecutive successful penalty kills over six games. Despite that special-teams success, Dallas struggled to contain the Devils at even strength.
Dallas Loses Winning Streak as Injury Adds to Frustration
The defeat ended a five game winning streak for the Stars, who were playing the fourth game of a season long six game homestand. Dallas entered the matchup with one of the NHL’s strongest defensive records but surrendered five goals in a disappointing performance.
The Stars also suffered a potential injury concern in the third period when defenseman Kyle Capobianco was helped off the ice with an apparent leg injury approximately five minutes into the period. He did not return to the game.
For New Jersey, the victory continued a strong run of form and provided an encouraging first outing from its newly acquired goaltender. Hellebuyck’s steady performance, combined with the Devils’ balanced scoring attack, gave the team another reason for optimism as it continued its winning streak.
Up Coming NHL Games for Devils and Stars
The Devils will have little time to celebrate, as they head to Colorado to face the Avalanche on Wednesday night to begin the next stop on their road trip. The Stars will look to rebound Thursday night when they host the Montreal Canadiens, continuing their six game homestand. New Jersey will aim to carry its momentum into Colorado, while Dallas will attempt to regroup after seeing its winning streak snapped and losing a key defensive contributor to an apparent injury.
