Connor McDavid Leads Oilers Past Kings 4-1 for Fifth Straight Win on Frozen Frenzy Night

McDavid Powers Edmonton’s Fast Start as Oilers Improve to 5-0-1

The Edmonton Oilers continued their impressive start to the NHL season on Tuesday night, defeating the Los Angeles Kings 4-1 during the league’s Frozen Frenzy night behind another spectacular performance from Connor McDavid. The Oilers captain recorded a goal and two assists in a dynamic first period before finishing with four points as Edmonton extended its winning streak to five games.

Vasily Podkolzin scored twice, Leon Draisaitl added a goal, and Devon Levi turned aside 39 shots to help the Oilers secure the victory. Edmonton improved to 5-0-1 and has scored at least three goals in every game during its strong opening stretch.

McDavid continued his remarkable start to the season, collecting at least three points in a single period for the 33rd time in his 11-year NHL career. Tuesday marked the 10th time he has accomplished the feat in the opening period.

The six time Art Ross Trophy winner entered the game among the league’s leading scorers and added to his impressive production, bringing his season total to 16 points while recording his fifth multi point performance.

Edmonton Explodes for Three First Period Goals

The Oilers wasted little time establishing control offensively, with McDavid and Draisaitl combining to give Edmonton an early advantage. McDavid opened the scoring by freezing former Oilers defenseman Cody Ceci before delivering a pass to Draisaitl, who used his quick release to beat Los Angeles goaltender Darcy Kuemper.

Just one minute later, Podkolzin doubled Edmonton’s lead by collecting a rebound after McDavid raced past Mikey Anderson and unleashed a powerful shot that Kuemper could not control. Despite the Kings applying pressure and keeping the Oilers pinned in their defensive zone for nearly two consecutive shifts late in the period, Edmonton struck again.

McDavid came off the bench, received a pass from Ty Emberson at the blue line and carried the puck forward in stride before finishing the play for his fourth goal of the season. The goal capped a dominant opening period for the Edmonton superstar and gave the Oilers a commanding three-goal advantage. Kuemper was replaced by Anton Forsberg to begin the second period as Los Angeles attempted to regroup.

Kings Outshoot Oilers but Struggle to Finish

Los Angeles generated plenty of opportunities throughout the night but could not overcome Edmonton’s early scoring outburst. Brandt Clarke finally got the Kings on the scoreboard late in the second period, firing a long shot through traffic to beat Levi. It was Clarke’s first goal since the young defensive cornerstone signed a five-year, $37 million contract with Los Angeles last June.

The Kings finished with a 40-16 advantage in shots on goal, but Levi delivered an outstanding performance to keep Edmonton comfortably in front. His 39 saves helped the Oilers withstand extended stretches of pressure and preserve their three-goal cushion.

Evan Bouchard contributed two assists for Edmonton, which continued to thrive despite playing without injured forwards Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The Oilers added an insurance goal when Podkolzin completed his second goal performance by scoring into an empty net, with McDavid and Draisaitl collecting the assists.

Oilers Keep Rolling as Kings Search for First Victory

Edmonton’s victory extended its winning streak to five games and reinforced the team’s early-season offensive momentum. The Oilers have consistently found ways to generate goals, with McDavid and Draisaitl leading the attack while Podkolzin provides another productive scoring option.

The Kings, meanwhile, fell to 0-3-2, remaining winless through the opening five games of coach Peter Laviolette’s first season behind the bench. Los Angeles and Philadelphia entered the night as the NHL’s only winless teams.

Laviolette is working to establish a more aggressive offensive identity for a franchise that has relied on a deliberate, defense-first approach for nearly two decades. Tuesday’s shot advantage demonstrated the Kings’ ability to generate chances, but their inability to convert those opportunities remains a significant concern. Los Angeles will look to turn its territorial advantage into better results as it continues adjusting to its new system.

Next NHL Games for Oilers and Kings

The Oilers return home Thursday to host Utah as they look to extend their winning streak to six games. The Kings will attempt to secure their first victory of the season when they host the Boston Bruins on Saturday.
