Cooper Flagg Leads Mavericks Past Winless Heat in 113-109 Victory

Flagg Delivers Clutch Performance as Dallas Hands Miami Fourth Straight Loss

Cooper Flagg delivered a standout performance with 29 points and 11 assists, including a crucial late game block, as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Miami Heat 113-109 on Monday night, sending Miami to 0-4 to begin the NBA season. The 19-year-old rookie came through when Dallas needed him most, scoring 12 points in the fourth quarter and making a game saving defensive play in the closing seconds.

Flagg blocked Andrew Wiggins’ three point attempt with 31 seconds remaining, preventing Miami from taking the lead and preserving a two point advantage for the Mavericks. Flagg finished with six rebounds, five steals and three blocks, showcasing his impact on both ends of the floor in a pressure filled finish.

P.J. Washington contributed 20 points for Dallas, while Kyrie Irving added 18 and Walter Clayton Jr. finished with 15. The Mavericks overcame several momentum swings to secure the victory and hand Miami another frustrating loss.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Records First Heat Triple-Double

Giannis Antetokounmpo produced an impressive all around performance for Miami, recording his first triple double since joining the Heat. He finished with 29 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists, keeping Miami competitive throughout the contest.

Davion Mitchell added 21 points for the Heat, who showed flashes of offensive potential but struggled to close out another tight game. Miami’s defeat marked the fifth time in franchise history that the Heat have opened a season with four consecutive losses. It was the first time they had started 0-4 since the 2008-09 season, putting early pressure on a team looking to find its rhythm.

Mavericks Overcome Miami’s Early Surge

Dallas opened the game with a 19-11 advantage midway through the first quarter, but Miami responded with a dominant stretch, outscoring the Mavericks 37-17 over the next 12 minutes to build a 12-point lead, its largest of the young season.

The Mavericks regrouped before halftime and reclaimed the advantage, heading into the break with a narrow 53-52 lead. The back-and-forth battle continued after halftime. Miami mounted another push and briefly moved ahead by 10 points, but Dallas battled back to cut the deficit and trailed by just one, 84-83, entering the fourth quarter.

With the game hanging in the balance, Flagg took over offensively and helped the Mavericks regain the lead midway through the final period. Dallas maintained its advantage down the stretch, with Flagg’s late block proving decisive as Miami’s comeback attempt fell short. The Heat’s struggles at the free throw line also proved costly. Miami missed 11 of its 25 attempts, leaving valuable points on the table in a four-point defeat.

Dusty May Faces Erik Spoelstra in First Meeting

Monday’s contest also marked the first meeting between first year Mavericks coach Dusty May and Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra. May previously coached Florida Atlantic University to the 2023 NCAA Final Four, establishing himself as one of college basketball’s rising coaching figures.

His connection to Miami extended beyond the basketball court, as his son, Jack, previously worked in the Heat’s video room before joining his father’s staff in Dallas. The matchup added another storyline to a game defined by Flagg’s late game heroics and Miami’s continued difficulty finishing close contests.

Up Coming NBA Games for the Mavericks and Heat

The Mavericks will return home Wednesday to host the Oklahoma City Thunder as they look to build momentum following their victory over Miami. The Heat will travel to Atlanta on Wednesday to face the Hawks, hoping to secure their first win of the season and put an end to their four-game losing streak. For Dallas, Flagg’s performance offered another glimpse of the young star’s potential. For Miami, the challenge is finding a way to turn competitive stretches into victories before its early-season struggles deepen.
