Dolphins Lose Leading Receiver Caleb Douglas for Chiefs Game

Caleb Douglas Ruled Out With Ankle Injury

Miami will be without its leading receiver when the Dolphins travel to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley announced Friday that rookie wide receiver Caleb Douglas will miss the game after suffering an ankle injury in last week’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Douglas left that game and did not return, and after not practicing at all this week, Hafley confirmed that the rookie will be sidelined against Kansas City.

Douglas had initially been expected to have a chance to return, particularly because Miami’s loss to San Francisco had become lopsided. However, his lack of participation throughout the week made his status increasingly concerning.

The third-round pick out of Texas Tech has quickly emerged as Miami’s top receiving option since the beginning of August. Through the first two games of the season, Douglas leads the Dolphins with seven receptions for 113 yards.

Dolphins Must Adjust Without Douglas

Douglas’ absence creates another challenge for a Dolphins offense that has struggled to consistently generate production. Miami enters Sunday’s matchup ranked 24th in the NFL in yards per game, making the loss of its leading receiver particularly significant.

The Dolphins are expected to rely more heavily on Malik Washington and fellow rookie Chris Bell. Hafley said the team feels good about Bell’s chances of playing despite the wide receiver being limited in practice twice this week.

Bell is also working through some soreness in his surgically repaired knee after tearing his ACL last December. He told reporters that he continues to deal with residual soreness but intends to do everything possible to play against the Chiefs. Bell added that doctors have told him the soreness and fluid in his knee are normal as he continues his recovery.

Miami could also turn to Jalen Tolbert, who signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins during the offseason but has been a healthy scratch for each of the team’s first two games.

Chemistry With Malik Willis Remains a Focus

Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik said the injuries at wide receiver will not force Miami to dramatically alter its offensive game plan. Instead, the Dolphins’ bigger concern is maintaining chemistry between the available receivers and quarterback Malik Willis.

With Douglas unavailable, Miami added another option by signing wide receiver A.J. Henning to its practice squad. Henning spent last season with the Dolphins and was also with the team during training camp before being released at the end of August.

The Dolphins will need their remaining receivers to step into larger roles against a Kansas City defense that will look to make Miami one-dimensional.

Robert Beal Jr. Out, Jaylen Wright Doubtful

Douglas will not be the only Dolphins player unavailable Sunday. Hafley also announced that defensive end Robert Beal Jr. will miss the game while dealing with a hamstring injury.

Running back Jaylen Wright is considered doubtful after suffering a stinger in last week’s game against San Francisco. His potential absence could further affect Miami’s offensive depth as the Dolphins prepare for a difficult road matchup.

Miami will therefore enter Sunday’s game without several contributors while also trying to establish consistency on offense. Douglas’ absence is particularly notable, however, as the rookie has quickly become the team’s leading receiver and one of its emerging offensive weapons.
