Eagles QB Jalen Hurts Expected to Miss Rest of Season After Blood Clots Discovered in Lungs

Eagles Quarterback Diagnosed With Deep Vein Thrombosis and Bilateral Pulmonary Emboli

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the NFL season after doctors discovered multiple blood clots in his lungs, a serious medical condition that will require treatment with blood thinning medication and sideline the three time Pro Bowler for at least three months.

Hurts’ agent, Nicole Lynn, and the Eagles released a joint statement Monday detailing his condition. According to the statement, Hurts was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and bilateral pulmonary emboli, meaning blood clots traveled from his legs to both lungs.

Although Hurts is described as clinically stable and without significant functional limitations, he will be prohibited from participating in football activities while taking anticoagulation medication. The treatment timeline is expected to keep him out for at least three months, putting the remainder of his season in jeopardy.

Hurts Played Against Jaguars After Initial Blood Clot Diagnosis

Hurts’ medical situation first emerged in London ahead of Philadelphia’s Week 5 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He was initially diagnosed with what was described as a superficial blood clot in his calf but ultimately played in the game despite the diagnosis.

The Eagles lost 19-17, with Hurts attempting 40 passes. According to sources cited by NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Hurts remained in a London hospital until 4 a.m. on game day and did not sleep the night before the contest after being advised that sleeping could pose health risks associated with the clot. The newly disclosed diagnosis revealed a more serious condition than initially understood, with the blood clots reaching Hurts’ lungs and requiring additional medical evaluation and treatment.

Eagles Place Hurts on Injured Reserve

Philadelphia placed Hurts on injured reserve two days ago after consulting with numerous doctors and medical experts. Although he had already been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers, the team waited to make the roster move until it had completed further consultations regarding his condition.

The decision leaves the Eagles without their starting quarterback as they navigate the remainder of the season. Hurts has been a central figure in Philadelphia’s offense, and his absence presents a significant challenge for the team’s postseason aspirations.

Tanner McKee Struggles in Loss to Panthers

With Hurts unavailable, backup quarterback Tanner McKee started Sunday’s game against Carolina. McKee completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and one touchdown, but Philadelphia fell to the Panthers 25-14 at home. The loss added to the Eagles’ concerns as they adjust to life without their franchise quarterback. McKee will be among the options Philadelphia considers while Hurts focuses on his recovery.

Hurts’ Health Takes Priority as Eagles Face Uncertain Future

The Eagles now face the prospect of finishing the season without Hurts, whose medical treatment will prevent him from participating in football activities for an extended period. While he is reportedly stable, the seriousness of the diagnosis makes his recovery the immediate priority.

Philadelphia will have to find a way to remain competitive without its starting quarterback while monitoring Hurts’ progress under medical supervision. His return to football will depend on his recovery and medical clearance, with no immediate timetable for his eventual return to the field.
