Former NFL quarterback and Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez was hospitalized after being pepper-sprayed and stabbed multiple times during a late-night confrontation with a 69-year-old truck driver in a downtown Indianapolis alley, court records show. The incident has led to criminal charges against Sanchez, including battery resulting in injury, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication, all misdemeanors.
According to a police affidavit filed Sunday, the altercation occurred early Saturday outside a hotel loading dock. Hotel video footage and the truck driver’s statement indicate that Sanchez, reportedly smelling of alcohol, confronted the driver of a box truck that had backed into the hotel. The encounter escalated outside the vehicle, prompting the driver to defensively pull out a knife.
Sanchez suffered stab wounds to his upper right torso and remained hospitalized early Sunday, Fox Sports reported, though he was listed in stable condition. The truck driver, identified as P.T., sustained a cut to his left cheek.
The affidavit describes the confrontation as intensifying quickly. The truck driver reportedly feared for his life and stabbed Sanchez two or three times, with additional stabs delivered when Sanchez allegedly approached him again. “The next thing P.T. knew was Mr. Sanchez looked at him with a look of shock, he slowly turned around, and Mr. Sanchez took off northbound in the alley,” the court document said.
Sanchez, 38, was in Indianapolis to call Sunday’s Raiders-Colts game. Instead, he now faces charges and an initial court hearing set for Tuesday. Police obtained a warrant to collect Sanchez’s phone and clothing from the hospital as part of the investigation. It was unclear whether Sanchez had secured legal representation as of Sunday.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears emphasized that the office will pursue the facts wherever they lead. “What began as a disagreement between a 38-year-old former professional athlete and a 69-year-old man should not have escalated into violence or left anyone seriously injured,” Mears said in a statement.
Sanchez told police at the hospital that he only remembered reaching for a window and did not know who else was involved or the exact location of the altercation.
Fox Sports colleagues expressed support for Sanchez. Curt Menefee said on the network’s primary NFL pregame show, “At this time our thoughts and prayers are with Mark and his family and all of those involved.” Play-by-play announcer Chris Myers also acknowledged Sanchez’s absence and introduced his replacement for the game, Brady Quinn, offering his thoughts and prayers for everyone affected.
Sanchez had a 10-year NFL career before retiring in 2019. A Long Beach, California, native, he starred at the University of Southern California and was selected fifth overall by the New York Jets in the 2009 NFL Draft. He also played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington Football Team. Following his retirement, Sanchez appeared on ABC and ESPN before joining Fox Sports as a game analyst in 2021.
