FBI Raids Tampa Church Leaders Involved in Multi-Million Dollar Conspiracy

Church Leaders Face Federal Court After Nationwide FBI Takedown Over Alleged Forced Labor, Money Laundering

Coordinated Law Enforcement Sweep

On Wednesday, federal agents executed a sweeping operation targeting the Kingdom of God Global Church — formerly Joshua Media Ministries International (JMMI) — resulting in the arrests of its two top leaders, David Taylor and Michelle Brannon, in a plot spanning multiple states. The arrests came alongside searches of luxury properties tied to the organization, including a mansion in Tampa’s Avila neighborhood and another in Ocala.

Indictment Details and Allegations

A federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Michigan issued a 10-count indictment accusing Taylor, 53, and Brannon, 56, of orchestrating a forced labor and money laundering conspiracy. The alleged scheme involved exploiting vulnerable individuals across Michigan, Florida, Texas, and Missouri through call centers that solicited daily donations, ultimately raising approximately $50 million since 2014.

Control, Coercion, and Abuse

According to the Department of Justice and indictment documents, Taylor and Brannon systematically controlled their victims’ lives, forcing them to live on-premises in call centers or ministry housing, work long hours without pay, and serve in personal roles as Taylor’s “armor bearers.”

Allegations include extreme disciplinary tactics for non-compliance: psychological abuse, public humiliation, sleep deprivation, restricted food, physical assaults, and threats of divine punishment.

Further, Taylor is accused of compelling victims to transport women to him and ensuring those women took emergency contraceptives (Plan B).

Lavish Lifestyle Funded by Donations

Federal prosecutors allege Taylor and Brannon diverted church donations to fund a lavish lifestyle acquiring multiple luxury properties, high-end vehicles, boats, jet skis, and ATVs. Raids included their Tampa estate, valued at nearly $10 million, and a similarly grand property in Ocala.

Arrests and Judicial Proceedings

  • Michelle Brannon was arrested at the Tampa estate and is scheduled to appear in federal court in Tampa on Thursday.

  • David Taylor was taken into custody in Durham, North Carolina, during a coordinated FBI action.

Both individuals face charges of forced labor, conspiracy to commit forced labor, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Each count carries a potential maximum prison sentence of 20 years, along with significant fines.

Justice Department’s Stand

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division emphasized that combating human trafficking remains a top priority for the Department of Justice. IRS Criminal Investigation officials have described the case as a forced labor ring masquerading as a religious ministry.

Final Take on the Fake Church

This case exposes the same toxic seed often found in high-control religious organizations: consolidation of power, financial exploitation, and manipulation all under the guise of spiritual authority. If the charges hold, this will be one of the rare criminal convictions for forced labor tied to religious coercion.
