Teacher And Student Die On Iowa Field Trip

A fifth-grade teacher and one of her students died during a school field trip to an Iowa nature recreation area, authorities said. The incident occurred at the MacBride Nature Recreation Area near Coralville Reservoir, where students were participating in an outdoor educational program.

Hannah Jorgensen, 24, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary School in Coralville, Iowa, and 10-year-old fifth-grade student Ahmed Osman died following an incident in the water on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

What Happened During The Field Trip

Emergency crews were called to the area shortly after noon after receiving a report involving two people in the water near the Coralville Reservoir spillway. Authorities said Jorgensen was recovered from the reservoir at approximately 12:43 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A search continued for the student, with emergency crews working through the afternoon and suspending the search overnight. Search and recovery efforts resumed the following morning. Osman was located in the water at approximately 1:24 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23. He was also pronounced dead.

Authorities have not released additional details about how the teacher and student entered the water or what led to the incident. The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation.

Fifth-Grade School Trip

Jorgensen and Osman were part of a fifth-grade field trip connected to the School of the Wild program. The program provides students with hands-on outdoor educational experiences and opportunities to learn about nature and the environment.

The trip was intended to be an educational experience for the students, but quickly became a devastating event for the school community.

School Community Mourns

The Iowa City Community School District said Jorgensen and Osman were deeply valued members of the school community.

The district said the loss was being felt by their families, classmates, friends, teachers and colleagues. Counselors and additional support were made available to students and staff at Borlaug Elementary as the community began dealing with the tragedy.

Jorgensen was 24 years old and worked as a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary. Osman was a 10-year-old fifth-grade student at the school.

Investigation Continues

Officials are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Authorities have not announced a final determination about what caused the incident or why the teacher and student entered the water.

The tragedy has left the Borlaug Elementary community mourning the loss of a teacher and student who died while participating in a school field trip. Officials are expected to provide additional information as the investigation continues.
