Fired DOJ Lawyer Blows the Whistle: 60 Minutes Exposé Reveals Alarming Trump-Era Abuses of Power

Fired DOJ Lawyer Blows the Whistle: Inside the 60 Minutes Interview Exposing Trump-Era Abuses of Power

“They told us to ignore the court, that the planes had to take off, no matter what.” — Erez Reuveni, former DOJ attorney, 60 Minutes interview, October 2025

A Rare Public Break from the Justice Department

In a 60 Minutes interview that sent shockwaves through Washington, Erez Reuveni, a veteran Department of Justice attorney fired earlier this year, described what he calls “systemic abuses of power and contempt for the rule of law” within the Trump-era DOJ. Reuveni, who spent 15 years at the department and once supervised more than 100 government lawyers, says he was pushed out after refusing to sign a false court brief. The filing, he told CBS, falsely labeled an immigrant as a terrorist and gang member to justify an illegal deportation.

“I wasn’t going to lie to a federal judge,” Reuveni said. “When I refused, they froze me out, then they fired me.”

The allegations, broadcast nationwide on 60 Minutes, mark one of the most detailed insider accounts yet of how Trump-aligned officials allegedly weaponized the Justice Department to serve political goals rather than legal ones.

Defying the Courts: ‘Let the Flights Take Off Anyway’

The most explosive revelation centers on a March 2025 internal meeting led by Emil Bove, a senior Trump DOJ appointee overseeing immigration enforcement. According to Reuveni, Bove told department lawyers that deportation flights “had to take off, no matter what.” When one lawyer raised concerns about a federal judge’s order halting removals, Reuveni says Bove replied:

“If a court tells you no, you tell that court, f** you.”

The comment drew audible gasps from staffers but Reuveni says the directive wasn’t rhetorical. He alleges that the department knowingly violated the court order by deporting detainees anyway, five hours after the injunction was issued.

“That was the moment I knew the rule of law was gone,” Reuveni told interviewer Bill Whitaker. “The DOJ was being run like a campaign office, not a legal institution.”

Ethics Experts: ‘The Highest Violation a Lawyer Can Commit’

Legal scholars and former DOJ officials interviewed by 60 Minutes called the allegations unprecedented. Peter Keisler, a former Acting U.S. Attorney General under George W. Bush, said if true, these actions would represent “the highest, most egregious violation of a lawyer’s code of ethics.”

“You cannot defy a court order,” Keisler said. “You can appeal it. You can seek clarification. But the second you deliberately ignore it, you cross the line from advocacy into lawlessness.”

The Government Accountability Project, which represents Reuveni, confirmed that a formal whistleblower complaint was filed in June 2025 alleging retaliation and obstruction of justice. The group says the case highlights “a pattern of executive branch impunity that has survived across administrations but peaked under Trump.”

A Pattern of Abuse and Retaliation

Reuveni’s account adds new depth to a series of reports documenting politicized decision-making at the DOJ from pressuring prosecutors in the 2020 election interference probes to directing agency lawyers to shield Trump allies from prosecution. He says career officials were increasingly replaced with political loyalists, many imported from Project 2025, a Heritage Foundation–backed blueprint to “purge the deep state.”

“It wasn’t about enforcing the law,” Reuveni said. “It was about using the law to hurt political enemies and reward friends.”

The Stakes for Democracy

The 60 Minutes segment has triggered calls in Congress for a full investigation. Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee are now seeking internal DOJ communications related to the deportation orders and disciplinary actions against Reuveni.

If substantiated, the whistleblower’s claims could expose criminal violations of federal law, including:

  • Obstruction of justice under 18 U.S.C. § 1505 for knowingly ignoring a federal injunction.

  • Retaliation against a federal employee under the Whistleblower Protection Act.

  • Fraud upon the court, a grave ethical and legal breach carrying disbarment or criminal referral.

As constitutional experts note, these are not bureaucratic errors, they are potential crimes.

“If proven,” said constitutional attorney Laurence Tribe, “this would be a direct assault on the separation of powers. The DOJ would have acted as judge, jury, and executioner.”

A Nation’s Faith in Its Laws

For many Americans, the Justice Department represents the final bulwark against executive overreach. Reuveni’s testimony suggests that under Trump-aligned leadership, even that institution was twisted into a tool of political control. When a government lawyer must choose between obeying the Constitution or keeping his job, democracy itself is on trial.

Be authentic, like a real person. #ThisIsARealComment

“I can’t believe it was just days ago that I received a call from my former attorney asking me to come in and testify at a grand jury investigation related to my work at a major corporation. The allegations against me were so outrageous that even the most seasoned prosecutor would have been forced to retract their case. But I’m not here to take credit for something they did for me, I was just doing my job.”

“I remember when I was fired from the Justice Department because of some scandalous cases that I handled. It was a devastating blow and one I’ll never forget. But now I have this opportunity to share what happened with you all, and hopefully it will bring a
